2.0 diesel

I currently tow with a 2.5 Omega 170 or so horses, but it's getting a bit long in the tooth, so need to change. Fancy an X type jag but worried about reliability, also fancy a Saab 9-5, but again so many stories, so will probably opt for a BM. BUT do I get a petrol or diesel.

I can't see how a 2 litre diesel would power a large car and 1300kgs on the back at any pace, other than on the flat, but Audi, VW, etc seem to manage

What is a 2 litre really like?

PS I know that BM do larger engines, but still dreaming of the Jag 2.0 TDCI

Test drive them all that's the only way to tell, I drove the Mondeo last year with the TDCI, fantastic and the X class benefits in every way from the Mondeo underpinnings. The Saab is the only one with question marks in the reliability/cost stakes. Haven't been in a 2 Ltr BMW recently but have you considered also the Volvo S60 in Diesel format a tough test for the competition.

I have a BMW 320D tourer automatic and tow my van which is a similar weight to yours with no problems whatsoever. Plenty of torque, loads of power, stable with excellent braking.

MPG towing around 25-30 depending on how you drive.
 
I used to own a citreon synagee, 2.0 ltr diesel (Peugeot 806 with a different badge), I towed a 1200kg van all the way to the Med no prob. My mate has the 806 and pulls a Pagent Champagne 1350 all up without any bother, hope this helps.

and, for what's it's worth, I towed my Senator Oklahoma to / from the Lake District recently with a Renault Espace 1.9 cdi and it was EASY and relaxed. So no problames with a 2 litre IMHO.

It tows our Ranger effortlessly which is around the same weight as your 'van. Plenty of acceleration, very smooth and quiet.

I use the cruise control whenever I can. Towing I get between 30-34 depending on conditions. Solo, my best yet was from Northampton to Newcastle upon Tyne at a steady 75mph with no delays - I got a staggering 61.5mpg...which was nice! Generally get 55 on a journey with airon on.

you need to work out your mpg the old fassion way miles divided

by the litres used, and then times it by 4.546.

61 mpg at 75mph just isn't possible. 50plus yes, 60 plus no.

All I can say is what it did - I have no reason to make it sound better than it is and it did read 61.5 at the end o fthe trip - given that this was over a journey of 240 miles with no deceleration or aceleration, at a steady 2,100 rpm.

I've no reason to not trust the computer in the car which is probably more accurate than the old fashioned way, as this is dependent on filling the car to the brim. I generally do over 600 miles between refills.
