2 berth Crown Signet (Elddis) (1999) damp

I've been to have a look at a 2 berth Crown Signet caravan & the only thing I've noticed is in the bottom right hand corner of the van underneath the sofa is some minor discolouring by about 4 inches, you can see a little bit of the wood is also damp & the wall in that small area at the bottom is also is soft. Now obviously there is a leak there but to what extent? Has anyone experinced this before? If so, is it repairable & how much would this cost to fix?

Cheers

hi well i guess if its a 1999 you wont be paying cheap money, therefore maybe its not worth it, i have bought caravans at around 1991-92 and oftern seen staining, these dont bother me too much as i would expext most vans to be showing a bit of damp somewhere in the van at this age (91 92), i dont like soft wood though this bothers me and to be honest i would always walk away from soft wood, if its a bargain maybe you should think carefully as if its worth it, but believe me their is plenty of 1999 vans out their that will be dry as a bone, please dont rush and buy the 1st think you see ...it will be worth the wait .

Hello Millar,

You can never tell the extent of damp simply by looking at the bit thats visible. When you see damp, it means its been affecting the caravan for some time and may have spread quite a lot further inside the wall/roof/floor than you see on teh surface. The only way to truely find out is to remove the wall paneling and check inside the wall etc.
