2010 Santa Fe towbar

I'm seriously considering ordering a new SF in the very near future and have been looking for a towbar.

The two dealers I have visited have quoted me for the Hyundai fit item (Witter?) ranging from about £350 to £670! The Hyundai website quotes about £350 for the '06 model onward which was rated at 2200kgs and 88kgs nose weight.

Is this towbar going to be suitable for the new model SF or is there a new towbar for the new model? I have looked at Witters website and they only show the old rated towbar.

Has anyone else come across this? I'm struggling to get any hard and fast answers and I can't see much point in ordering the car unless a towbar is readily available. I was hoping to get a detatchable item for it.

I have also been unable to find a towbar for the 2010 model. Judging by the outward differences between it and the previous model it is very unlikely that the towbar of the latter would fit. It seems that you will just have to be patient. Maybe Hyundai themselves would at least be able to give you an outlook, when one will become available.

I am in the same position with my new Sorento, Witter have one in development, but can't give a date for availability.

Bosal have cancelled their developement for some uknown reason and Brinks have not even bothered to reply to the 2 e:mails I have sent.

I know that they are available in Germany & Holland because I have seen them on the web. So why are they not available over here?

Hi Steve

It is very frustrating isn't it? Have you bought your new Sorento? It's a lovely vehicle. I may hang on til I get some assurance that a towbar is going to be available. Can't have a towcar without a towbar!

I'm going back to the dealers today. Hopefully I'll get some useable info and if so will post back. I would imagine that the towbar will fit both cars as they are essentially the same.

They are probably waiting for the delivery of steel from India or China, now that our steelworks are all shut?

Buyers usually prefer towbars made in their own country - eg Witter in UK, Westfalia in Germany, Brink in Netherlands.

Under EC rules there's nothing to stop you buying a "foreign" one but the shipping could be expensive because of the weight/distance.

Because the 2010 is a different model to the 2006-2009, then type approval will have to be obtained again, despite the external similarities between a 2009 and 2010. It may well be that Witter are designing out the issue of weakening the rear bumper armature by cutting parts of it out as this is an issue on their towbar for the 2006-2009.

When you collect your new Sante Fe get the dealer to show you that all of the electrics on the tow bar work correctly, when I had mine fitted by the main dealer we were going away the next day and it wasn`t untill we connected up the electrical connections on the van that we realized that nothing worked as it should.

We towed the van to the dealers (early in the morning so no traffic) who then tried to tell me that it must be a fault on the van and not on the twin electrical sockets.

After he fitted the test board and found that in fact the fault was on the towbar electrics he rushed the car into the workshop for around 30 mins to get the problem fixed.

So get it checked first.

Hi John

Good point, it hadn't even crossed my mind. I'm going for the single 13 pin system now, not the twin. I figured that new vans from 2009 have the newer 13 pin socket and it makes sense to put that on the car incase I'm fortunate enough to be able to upgrade the caravan in the next few years.
