i use a vodafone dongle huawei k650 with an acer aspire 110 on linux /linpus lite - fedora version with out any problems.
( the drivers on the dongle are windows based and so will not work on linpus /linux)
so....
Depending on the repo type.fedoro /unbuntu etc you can down load a card driver from the vodafone betavineforge ( for the huawei dingle- so it may work with orange) site although you would have to engage in some writing of code in to the software using the "terminal" on your netbook.
This would set the vodafone icon intoy our desk top otherwise you have to go into terminal and typein .... "sudo vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver" to get it to run.
Before down loading the software you would have to check the type of linux and the version /release on you netbook.
Acer also provide a driver called "mobile partner" but this can hang when trying to connect although it is connected.
I am not sure how the asus compares to the acer but have you enable the advanced menu. This can provide advanced functions with add/remove software, better updates and can give you access to the repo lists to add programs and updates automatically.
I think thee have been problems with the orange dongles and finding compatible software to drive the dongle.
There are many forums regarding lipus lite on netbooks ,you just need to search a lot of net.
good luck
