No, only "G" vehicles first registered March 2006 onwards. I can't recall the specific day in March it is.

Its the 23rd March 06.

The prices & info can be found here :-http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524

Note that it's not a 4x4 tax. Band G will catch out most family sized cars with petrol Engines over about 2.2litres regardless of how many wheels are driven. No new regular cars fall into Band A (Free tax) and only a handfull of sub 1 litre city cars make band B (

The tax is not on 4x4 vehicles at all but is actually based on emissions so there will be some 4 wheel drive vehicles that fall into the category and some 2 wheel drive ones.

In fact while we're on topic I had a conversation with my neighbour about this the other week.

He says that I should pay "Gas guzzler" tax cos I own a Jag (2.5 litre X Type). When I pointed out that he does 3 times more miles in a year in his Astra Diesel than me, & therefore 1) Guzzles more fuel than I do, & 2) uses the roads more than I do he went a little quiet................

I seem to recall that around 700 vehicles fall into this 'gas guzzling' tax bracket and only 200 are 4 x 4's.

Speaks volumes but then the press never report it this way.

Martin.

We recently brought a new 4x4 for towing our caravan and one of the must be's, was that the car had to be registered before the band G tax come in on 23/03/06.

By the same token we got a band B car

The higher tax bracket for some 4x 4's and big engined cars dosen't seem to have deterred people from using them, so with this in mind i would not be in the least surprised if the tax goes up again---and again----and again

The higher road fund licence may not have halted sales much yet but wait until the residuals of these vehicles are poor. The road tax might not matter much to first owners but it will matter a lot on the second hand market.

I guess that second hand G band cars will be very hard to shift when 3 or 4 years old.

I am looking for a new car & staying away from the G band is absolutely essential.

I know it will not suit everybody but those of us near the channel ports are looking at holiday homes on the other side of the channel with a bit more interest than usual.

The French scraped there road tax and put the cost onto fuel and their diesel is still about 75 to 80% the cost we have to pay.

If the top rate of car tax goes to
