A salutatory reminder.

This unfortunate chap had serious accident on a scooter whilst in Thailand. His travel insurance was world wide, and came inclusive with his bank account. But it doesn't cover medical expanses for trips over 30 day. Fortunately he's now recovering and crowd funding has raised sufficient to pay his medical costs (£15k). Like we hear regularly on the Forum, it is essential to read the small print T&Cs.

Good reminder as many travel insurance policies have clauses in them that make the policy almost worthless. Some you need to be a lawyer to understand the clauses etc.

Also check household insurance as this can be voided if the property is left unattended over 30 days. At least with travel insurance you can purchase an extension on a daily pro rata rate.

The cover included in bank accounts is not always as good as stand alone policies and is generally fairly basic. Like all policies though you must check it to see what it actually covers as there are always limits and these need to be understood.
The problem would not occur with a stand alone policy bought for the trip, this would ask for the dates involved which would have solved the problem so it is more that you should read what the bank policy covers and make sure it is wide enough. A check on the policy would have shown this problem and the cover could probably have been extended for a small premium.
