Abbey GTS 2007 Door Lock problem

Hi,

We have been having a problem with the lock on our Abbey for about a year first it started to stick on the inside the lever staying down then during the winter on two occassions the locking barrel has come out completely when trying to unlock from outside. Have managed to put it back and its working but very stiff. Does anyone know the best cause of action to fix it our do I need to replace it. If I need a replacement lock any ideas where I could get one would be helpful. Thanks

easy fix take green and red caps off to show screws take it all to bits by removing cer clip take barrel out and use light grease its the inner barell that sticks its a easy fix.

This is a known problem, Dustydog sent me the instructions via E Mail to fix, I have mislaid these, the dealer did exactly as he had sugested, and has been for a while now.

Hopefuly dusty will be along soon to give you same instructions.

knew that I'd saved it somewhere!This is a tip to repair the Hartal door lock.

' ...remove red and green screw covers and cover with HARTAL writen on it, remove the 4 screws , then you will need to turn the handle assy upside down (on a worktop or bench is best) then remove the circlip and double spring clip , the handle now comes out of the locating apperture , simply file or sand the hole to make biger then reverse the removal procedure , a smear of petroleum jelly wont go a miss either...'

Just thought I'd let you know what Swifts advice was vie my e-mail

"Thank you for your correspondence with the Swift Group. I have spoken to the door and lock supplies who have advised the lock can be lubricated which should help free up its stiffness however if it is really bad then a replacement lock may be necessary. It has been suggested that the lock is looked at by your dealer who would be able to confirm if the lock requires replaceing and if so order the necessary parts. I trust this information is of use. Dave" I have had beeter advice from Trucker and as the dealership is over and hour away I'm just going to do it myself. Very disappointed in Swifts advice.

I think Swifts reply is pretty fair and the norm if you lubricate and still have problems take to your dealer.

The lock has been lubricated by the service engineer and it made no difference.

Hartel door locks are fitted to number of caravan makes , not just Swift. They have not been good locks. Although I did my own "fixit" it's gone stiff again. Now being changed for the third time at the dealers.

From an engineering point of view it is blatantly obvious that the tolerance betwen the moving parts , shaft in particular , is too tight.

Why don't Hartel just change the tolerance at the manufacture stage?? I just don't understand this "continue to make them broken" philosophy.

Following the procedure posted above I repaired the stiff lock on my 2009 Pageant last weekend. Lubrication alone will not work, it is a simple case that the hole is too small for the shaft that rotates in it. Both are plastic & are poorly made. I filed out the hole a bit first with a round file & then I wrapped some emery paper around a marker pen which was the correct diameter. Then finish with some vaseline on the shaft & it now works great.

The only extra advice i'd give to that posted above is that the red & green screw covers are hard to extract so I drilled a 1.5mm hole in the centre of each & used the drill bit to tweak them out. You dont notice the holes when they're back on - its neater than chewing up the edges.
