I really cannot agree with that point of view. My Disco 2,was serviced fully in accordance with JLRs requirements and looked after and driven no differently to other cars before or afterwards. It was an out and out dog. If what you say were correct how come there are reliability indices that show some marques and models
poles apart in reliability?
I did state that "I think" as I do not know a definite answer. After all some LRs go for years without issue. The one I used in the sixties was a Defender type LR and was abused with different drivers every day and it never put a step wrong.

Sounds like I've been lucky.
Though some would argue that a Freelander isn't a real Land Rover mines a little over 20 years old & still giving very good reliable service 👍

My son had a Freelander 2 auto HSE from 2008 which gave excellent service. The only issue was a bearing in the rear transmission which LR fixed FOC even though the car was out of warranty. He let it go last year and now has a Dacia Duster which not as plush as the Freelander is quite an impressive motor and low servicing costs too.

Two range rovers and two mistakes (also left RAC after a year)
Bought a vw touareg and best car ever even after four years. Also try the AA with breakdown repair cover meaning they pay up to £535 towards a garage repair. Ive had that for the last six years covering two vehicles. £35 per month and saved me a fortune
A lady was turning her Defender near our drive and it just stopped showing a low battery warning. Assistance via jump leads did not work so she’s now awaiting RAC who forecast mid afternoon. She’s planning on getting rid of it as it’s been so troublesome despite being a nice car to drive. What you cannot see in the photo is the next door neighbours Juke which again awaited a long time for RAC attendance and it could not be fixed. My daughter and granddaughter also had long waits for RAC attendance, the latter whilst in darkest west wales countryside. View attachment 9873

Not been stolen then - yet!
There are now very effective canbus immobilisers but not yet Thatcham approved. These allow the owner to input a pseudo PIN code using predetermined sequence of button pushes in the car. From 2-20 sequences required and without the correct control function sequence it will not start. For those with poor memory or short on time some provide fobs. These systems prevent key cloning being effective. However for RAV4 they won’t prevent ner do well accessing your canbus via the wheel arch, only to find though that their kit will not start the car.

Where my son worked, they use Landrover Defenders for genuine bush off track work in Africa. They spent more time in the workshops being repaired than on the road. They now have a fleet of the proper Landcruisers and not the style of Chelsea tractor you see in the UK. Similar to the picture, but no top.

Years ago I had the 2.4vx, sold it for next to nothing. Saw one a few weeks ago on a forecourt when passing on a little job down in south wales. £16,995. No wonder the safari guys etc are holding on to (and still driving) them

Am I getting this right, for £35 a month for six years, an outlay of £2520, on top of that you have also saved "a fortune"?
With our May 2016 Disco 4, so a similar 6.5 years period out of warranty, it's had no recovery, but had one failure though without stopping its use. The latter, the stupid oil level sensor* two weeks out of warranty that cost £1100, where I paid 10% , so £110 on breakdowns.
I would have been £2410 out of pocket with that AA package.
You have had clearly some way less reliable wheels than us.

* Stupid IMO as whatever attributes an electronic static, not even dynamic, oil level sensing system can bring, why leave out a conventional dipstick?
The attributes would be way better if it could sense with the engine running, even then why leave out something so basically reliable as a physical dipstick?
The failure when they finally got to it was not the sensor, but I was told in the harness!

I run a little chauffeur business so you can make up to five times a year. Heres just one example. Had a merc S class where the wiper motor failed. £480 total cost but all I paid was the AA £35 excess. Take a look and decide for yourself. Also my range rover battery failed and replaced for just the £35 excess for the replacement battery (fitted) and comes with the AA warranty for four years should it fail again (and a varta battery fitted).

And my £35 monthly payment also covers a hire car for three days, onward recovery, home start etc. Check AA brc on the AA website and get a quote

I haven't said anything to the AA about commercial use as I'm a private chauffeur so unlike a taxi driver I don't have signage, taxi plates etc. Honestly go on the AA website and get a quote. You will even get a new member discount

I am not seeing why I would want to spend a great deal more than I presently pay to cover assist for our two cars and caravan together.

I only insure for what would be life changing levels of claims, where legally obliged and in this case to have the minimised hassle of a one call access to services I would otherwise have to hunt for. Not to off set running cost risks.

Everyone's needs are different obviously. If you're an elderly person who does let's say 3k a year then thats understandable. I do in excess of 50k a year and have covered my monthly/annual premium time and time again. I've had this cover in place years and it's been invaluable. Let's say the average basic cost for standard breakdown cover is £10 per month yet your starter motor or alternator goes. One repair claim would pay back the yearly premium depending on what vehicle obviously.

Also one call is all it takes ie. car breaks down, AA recovery takes you (and caravan if required) back home or to an AA approved repairer then sorts the paperwork for you. No hassle whatsoever, pure piece of mind and a hire car if needed
