Alde Antifreeze versus Holts

Need to top-up my system with the 5 yr pink variety of Antifreeze. Checked prices on Amazon Prime and found these:

Presume both are Glycol? Certainly both are G13!

Note one significantly more expensive than the other.
Note one has a claimed effective life of double the other.
Note both are G13
Note one arrives faster than the other.

Clear winner in Holts.

What am I missing? Has anyone any thoughts on which to buy? Any dire warnings I should heed?antifreeze.jpg

I'm presuming mixing would cause no issues (currently just finished the Alde G13)

Are both based on O.A.T,(organic acid technology),if so then they have a life spans of around five years,I personally use Preston's from Toolstation that lasts upto 10.years and has a wide temperature range

Check that they're both concentrated and not ready-mixed - as some fluids are already diluted at 50%.

I believe the G12++ is the latest requirement from Alde.

I buy exactly the same spec as the Alde fluid, easily sourced and decant into a 1ltr bottle from Alde that I keep in the van.

Both OAT so far as I can tell.

Both 50% dilute and ready for use.

The advantage of the cheaper fluid here is price. Alde lasts 5 years whilst the Holts stuff up to 10! (Mind you I would still change after 5 and ignore the apparent saving of a 10 year life)

My reason for posting was just to check forum views. I'm sure Alde don't make the antifreeze as Mr P points out and, lets be honest, anything connected with the leisure industry seems to attract a rediculous price hike!

Oh and Holts is G12++ or G13, pink in colour and matches the Alde advice regarding type of stuff to use. (G12++ or G13)

Very confident Holts will do the job and whilst both are affordable I see no reason to pay over double the price for the Alde name!

Thanks for responses.

The G12++ that Alde now specify is because G13 had a constituent which is now banned in Germany (2024)and as both Fuchs and BASF are based in Germany then the G13 would become unavailable, having said that you can still get G13 no problem, so either it's made elsewhere by other companies or they have changed the formulae but its still meets the specification. They now supply either G12evo or G12++, confused or what?

Manufacturer branded goods nearly always come with a premium, I changed a wheel bearing on my Ifor Williams trailer last year, the Ifor Williams "packaged" bearing was 3x the cost of the same bearing from Simply Bearings:astonished:

and both bearings came off the same line and out the same door at the manufacturer!

I ensure I buy here products that are actually "approved" by the spec holder/owner to the required specification, not that claim to "meet", or are "suitable for vehicles etc requiring the specification".

I know these statements can result in different things, and are written very carefully to be assuring to the uninformed and just keep being legal. Unfortunately unlike the product itself words as used are not copyrighted.

Some can be quite suitable, but they are not what the buyer might assume they are buying, an approved product that "will" be suitable.

Here the G12++ is a Volkswagen Audi Group specification.

A particular critical challenge, here and with antifreezes in general is not in achieving protection from freezing but in their longevity and application related safety, along with no unwanted complications. of control of corrosion protection. Alde having identified what products meet their equipment's needs.

However, as most equipment makers don't publish who their actual OEM, item maker is, then having that little gem of info is very difficult to find out, other than if it's blazoned on the bit you removed etc. In the quoted rolling element bearing case with many counterfeit and unknown brands about I would be very wary. Much as there is with antifreezes, a huge market out there for budget products.

Not really as in many cases the container looks exactly the same as the original one.
