I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED AN AKS 1300 BUT ON THE SECOND TIME OF USING IT THE RATCHET WHEEL HAS SIEZED. IS THERE A WAY OF FREEING IT WITHOUT CALLING ON AN ALKO ENGINEER.

Hi Keiron

Easy solution - I have used it

Copied from the ALKO support website

(3) Hand wheel jams or spins without tightening.

Hand wheel has been forced against the split ring.

Ensure that the AKS 1300 is attached to the vehicle tow ball, this will support the friction pad. In the centre of the hand wheel is the end of the shaft of the friction pad, surrounding this is the black metal washer, which holds the wheel in place. Take a tube, which is large enough to fit over the shaft and onto the washer, strike the tube firmly with a hammer to push the wheel back into position. The wheel should now spin normally and ratchet when tightened.

IMPORTANT: The stabiliser handle must be fully raised and the hand wheel fully unwound before connecting or disconnecting the stabiliser from the ball

I had that problem on our first trip out with the Alko fitted. I phoned the supplying dealer and he advised me to get a large pair of mole grips or stiltson and loosen the ratchet wheel with them!. It needed a new circlip afterwards, but all is well now.

Only tighten the wheel until you hear a couple of clicks or it`ll jam on, and release the stabiliser before manouvering the van onto the pitch with the tow car.

I have the alko 1300 fitted to the bailey horrible hitch to use aren't they.

the first few times I used it would not release the ball or the wheel got stuck, and after a visit to the dealer for advice I now carry a correct size socket from an old set and a small hammer, when it sticks on and thats about half the time I place the socket over the shaft in the centre of the wheel and give it a sharp tap to release it in a very similar manner to stuats answer but I find that it is a on going problem not just a one off.
