My 2003 Bailey Pageant Majestic is fitted with 185/65R14 90N reinforced tyres. I need to replace one (now my spare) that I damaged exiting the petrol station at Auchan, Dunkerque.

Anyone got any advice on (a) whether reinforced are necessary, (b) if they are where I can get them at a reasonable price (local quote is £52) or (c) if they are not what alternatives I could or should consider?

Hi,

If you go to the website ..... www.mytyres.co.uk they do a great selection of tyres which i would imagine would do your caravan , also do a huge range for the car .

Good luck ... harry

You definitely need reinforced tyres!

Check the maximum load rating on the side of your ordinary car tyre - it will say something like max load 650lbs at 35psi. Take the weight of your caravan and divide it by two (or 4 for a T/A) and would you really want to put those tyres on your van???

Mytyres or blackcircles should be able to sort you out.

had to have Green Flag out to the site at Bladon Chains last Thursday it appears that we were about to "lose" the tyre as we backed it onto the pitch. Not sure what got in it but lucky it happened where it did ! Any way we were directed to Charlet Tyres just outside Oxford close to the site and I paid

Reinforced tyres doesn't mean that they have any higher load carrying capacity. It just means that they can take a heavier beating, for example when negotiating a kerb. Reinforced tyres are therefore not essential for caravans.

From the details Andrew has given in his query, his tyres have a '90' load rating, which is equivalent to 600kg (1322lb). This is what is important. Do not rely on the max load figure given in lbs on the sidewall. This applies to the US market only and they have different standards and conditions.

Hi Jennifer,

It's best to use a caravan wheel - and if your caravan has either the "old" four bolt AL-KO pattern steel wheel or the "new" five bolt steel wheel - then you can buy these from caravan shops or mail order companies like Towsure.

If your caravan has alloy wheels, then a steel spare is OK - but you may need a different set of wheel bolts (the cone shape where the bolt tightens onto the wheel is a different size) - speak with your caravan dealer.

Why can't (or shouldn't) you use a car wheel? - a car has it's weight evenly distributed via 4 wheels whereas a caravan can weigh almost as much, but only uses 2 wheels - so the wheels need to be built stronger than an equivalent car wheel. Especially true of alloy wheels used on caravans.

Robert
