Some remarks made by persons , some on tv others casual make me think where on earth do they get them from. For instance,

Watershed

Back to back

"See you later" ( never again)

and so on, what's yours?.

Hi Robert,

I was born in London, latterly an Essex girl. Most of my sayings I have inherited. Some I can understand their origin, some don't make sense at all. "How's your belly off for spots" i.e. how are you?...... for example, how did that originate I wonder?

I've noticed the American non-word "gotten" is creeping in to radio over here. The past tense of "get" is "got", why use gotten?

We seem to be using 'lawyer' now instead of 'solicitor' - that bugs me.

I agree with Chrisbee 'gotten' seems to be appearing all over.

I know this is going off a bit but on some forums, I can't believe people spell the following as:

puppys (puppies)

camra - (camera)

lense - (lens)

lateley - (lately)

Oh, one I don't like :

'We'll be in CONTACT', what's wrong with 'we'll be in touch?'

or

'We can't get in CONTACT with him'

Some people can spell, some can't.........I don't believe that people's poor spelling should be criticised in general - if we understand what they mean, what's the problem? There are exceptions, of course - public notices, news reports on TV, signs in shop windows.........things like that really should be spell-checked first and I don't think there's any excuse for not doing that. A bus stop outside a large shopping centre near where I live has the word 'buses' spelt as 'busses' - that infuriates me!

And a news report on a local TV station yesterday had the word 'occasion' spelt with a double 's' - for goodness sake!!!

I can't stand interviewees on tv saying "You know".

It's " pruven" not "Proven" .

Cheers

Chimley?

Sustificate?

I know a plumber that soldiers pipes.

I dislike the phrase "animal or pet owners" surely we should be "pet carers or keepers". Is it possible that one creature (human) is able to own another?

At the end of the day when we're all singing from the same hymn sheet it will make things more of a level playing field when we're going forward. To be perfectly honest with you I need to go away and push the envelope before somebody moves the goalposts leaving us with a ballpark figure.

absolutely!

Amazing how so much can say so little :)

why does 'liaise' not register when spell checked in Lotus Notes. It always offers me an alternative of 'liars' or 'lipase' whatever that means.

Annoys the hell out of me.

I just love my favourite Americanism.

"Have a NICE day"

I use it with my terrible southern USA drawl accent when somebody annoys me and we have "words".

They get the point if they apply a little lateral thinking ;0)

I hate it when I hear people saying. "to be honest" and "and I quote" using their 2 fingers on both hands like bunny rabbit ears????? whats all that about???

I work in a GP surgery and recently someone was asked to do a poster for the christmas OPENING times. This is what it read........

Christmas Eve closing at 2pm

Christmas Day closed

Boxing Day closed

New Years Eve closing at 2pm

New Years Day closed

The 'saying' "IF YOU WANT A JOB DOING PROPERLY DO IT YOURSELF" jumped to mind.
