We've got an 2006 2.0 litre C-Max TDCi which tows a Bailey Series 6 Pageant Provence MTPLM of 1420kg = 93% ratio. Its tows like a dream, will easily accelerate up to 70mph, cruises nicely at 60mph in 6th gear on the flat. We get about 30mpg towing, 45mpg around the lanes solo and up to 55mpg on a motorway run at 75mph.

Its everso comfortable, has a nice high driving position and goes like a rocket without a van on the back. We'd certainly get another one.

Anthony, like dave,i've also got a Cmax 2000TDCi 06 reg. recomend the car to anyone even if not towing . Without the van it will give you 62 mpg in 6th gear at 60mph , but it did drop down to 30/35 mpg while pulling the van , but there again its swings and roundabouts . what you lose pulling the van you gain the rest of the time . Cant speak for a 1.8 though . id go for the 2000 . brian

dave & brian , good replies , i'm interested in the 2.0tdi c-max, i tow a bailey burgundy (1400kg) with a kia sedonna , but the caravan doesn't quite fit on the drive ( 9 inches too long), & the kia is up for renwal so i'm looking at the c-max & series 7 bailey bordeaux ( 1320kg ), i wanted to know , dave how many people do you carry when you tow your caravan & brian what does your caravan weigh & how many people do you carry in your car as we have 3 adult size teenagers & i was thinking that the car would struggle...pete

hi pete, the weight or MRO/ UNLADEN is 1082kg MTPLM/MAW is 1335kg. normally its just my wife and i plus we load the car up. when we bought the van the supplier checked the towing capabilities of our car for us and gave us a print out . you can do it yourself by going to the TOWSAFE site . hope this helps . brian

Hi pete, it's usually myself and the missus but we frequently take the two grandkids (age 7 and 10) away as well so the car is fairly well laden (we also shove their bikes in the van. The C-Max is very roomy inside and I'd be quite happy to sit in the back with another two adults for a longish journey - it's a reasonable 5 seater, I suggest you take the brood out for a test run to see if they all fit.

Hi Anthony,

The August issue has the Towcar Award 2008 supplement with it, which includes a positive review of the C-Max 1.8 TDCi. The issue goes on sale on 25th June.

We had a 2ltr diesel in 2006, pulling a variety of smaller caravans, and it was universally popular with the PCV team. From what I recall, the biggest criticism that any of us had was that the clutch took some getting used to - it was quite easy to stall the C-Max until you got used to it.

I'd also agree that it goes like a missile when not towing and has great interior space.

Hope it helps

Hi Anthony

I'd also be interested in comments about the 1.8 TDCI as I may be changing my current C-Max for one to obtain a higher kerb/towing weight.

I currently have the 1.6 TDCI 110BHP model which is only 5 BHP less than the 1.8.

I have been really pleased with my Zetec model - great handling both solo & towing - most unlike an MPV (compared to my previous Nissan Almera Tino), comfortable, great driving position & very economical.

I only tow a small Abbey 2 berth but you'd swear it wasn't there most of the time but I want to change to a slightly bigger van.

My only complaint would be with the clutch as sometimes I find the 'bite' quite high & obviously use higher revs (but that may be down to me as its my first diesel!).

All in all, I'm so pleased with it I'm considering replacing it with the same again..... (or will I try a Volvo V50?!)

Cheers

Mark

Mark, Anthony

Sorry, I've just looked and it is the 1.6 TDCi Titanium, not the 1.8 that we have tested.

It did well though...
