My friend had a deaf Dalmatian called William, who was a lovely dog. They had a huge garden with a pond, and some ducks, and he used to love watching the ducks but never chasing them. He was the same as yours - could sense when each one of the family was coming home and went to the door to wag his tail and greet them. He was good with the family cat too, and used to fret if the cat stayed out too late at night and wouldn't sleep until she came in. He lived to a ripe old age for a Dalmatian, too, and is still sadly missed by the whole family.

My friend is 'owned' by a lovely deaf dog. As she was taken in from the local Animal Sanctuary it was a while before Mary learned of her disability. One heavy pan landing next to her pet 'Maisie2' on a tiles kitchen floor and no flinch from the animal, probing she had a problem.

However, Maisie2 is a delight to know. She is gentle and loving. Sh also knows exactly who carries treats around her 'walking area' and sits next to the people in question. Walkers without treats she completely ignores.

They say animals are stupid but I would totally disagree with this, even with an impediment.

Our cavalier (who lived to 19!) started losing her sight and hearing at about 15. At 17 she went missing on site. We had just noticed, thinking she was as usual asleep in her bed, when we heard much laughter coming from a van about 4 away, as we wandered that we were beckoned in to see the owners' staffy at the van door watching our dog in the awning eating its meal. It had been eating when she wandered in and took over, he wasn't brave enough to tackle her.

By that time she had started with dementia as well and could cope well at home and in the van as she was familier with both but could not cope with visiting other homes. What a darling.
