ASUS Mini Media Player

Just bought one of these - great. The only problem is that it works on 12 volts via a 220volt power supply. Not good if you are off grid. I'm wondering, if I buy a suitable lead, can I run it off a 12 volt socket or is the power supply which comes with the player something other than just a power supply? I would ask the manufacturer but internet on the site where I am (Portugal) is not great and it takes ages to get through to the makers site. Has anyone else used an alternative supply - I do have a voltage inverter so could this be used in preference?

People say you shouldn't, but we did a similar thing. We bought a cheap digital TV from Argos for the caravan about 3 years ago. It had a 240v to 12v adaptor with it, so I cut the 12v cable and fitted a 12v connector instead. Never had any problem during the 3 years.

I've got a Sumvision media player and I got a standard 12 volt lead and plug from Maplins which works fine ,used it for 3 years with no problems. There were 2 sizes of centre hole,2.1 or 2.5 iirc,i took the 240v lead and player with me to check.

I've managed to get a lead and it all works ok. The tv doesn't have a stabilised supply to it so perhaps it has one built in. When I get home I'll write to Asus and see what they say.
