We are considering changing our caravan from a single to a twin axle. Has anyone towed a twin axle with this type of car? Manufacturers info max tow weight 1900kgs, kerb weight 1948kgs. Actual weight when measuered on a weight bridge with driver and a nearer full tank of fuel 2070kgs, car is fitted with an factory fitted towbar with a nose weight of 85kgs. Any advice please.

kevin, it all depends on which caravan you get!! you should do a match between car and caravan to see what the ratio is, bearing in mind that the 85% rule is not law but there as a guide for your safety.

Thanks Stuart, maximum weight of new caravan will be no more than 1840kgs. I have been towing for 5 years and have covered more than 5k miles so I assume that I fall into the expreienced bracket. What are your thoughts?

Hi Kevin.

The allroad makes an excellet tow car so long as you can put up with the VAG commercial diesel engine noise.

You might want to test drive one for a weekend to experience the fuel economy. A mate of mine runs one and tow's a 1500Kg van. He gets low 20's Mpg out of his and liken's it to a truck.

It's horses for coarses though and if your happy with one I wouldn't kick it out of bed. Good German build does mean they last well and don't wear out bits like they are out of fashion.

Regards.

Hi Steve

Thanks for your comments, perhaps my original information was slightly confusing as I already own a 2007 Allroad, the V6 is sliky smooth and makes a very good match with our current caravan. Towing my cuurent van I get an average of 24 mpg, solo I get between 38-44 mpg. I was hoping someone within the forum has towed a twin axle with the Allroad and could give me some feedback as I am loathed to change the car for a Q7.

Kevin,

I'm down on you on two counts.

I tow with an A6 Avant 2.5 with a CVT multitronic.

You have basically the same car with a higher output engine and with four wheels driven.

On the basis of my experience over the last three years using the car I would say, go for it.

The 85kgs could be your stumbling block as the heavier the caravan the less as a percentage of total weight will be noseweight but providing you dont go to the maximum you should be OK.

Thanks for your comments.

I agree the nose weight is bit of a problem, as the car is fitted with air suspension and trailer stabilisation I think with careful loading the outfit should be stable enough. We are also considering the Bailey Wyoming as this comes in at 1675kgs and is perhaps more of a match for the car.

I would thoroughly recommend the Allroad Kevin.

I recently bought a 2005 2.5 TDI 180bhp Tiptronic and it towed our Elddis Avante 630 T/A flawlessly. We covered about 1200 miles recently and the combined towing / solo mpg averaged out at 25. The car pulled effortlessly and would cruise at 60 all day long.

I'm not sure what the power and torque figures for your car are, but I'm sure they're higher than those of the 2.5 so you should have no problems.

Sorry if this reply is a bit late to be of any use, but hope it helps anyway.

Cheers,

John.

Thanks John for your comments, power output is very close yours 180bhp and 380Nm of torque. Although I do intend on having the engine remapped at an Audi specialists, increase to 220bhp and 400Nm.
