Audi Q7 tyres

Hello do any of you tow with the Audi Q7?

A guy at work has one and is having to replace tyres at 8,000-10,000 miles,Audi say nothing is wrong and have produced some paperwork to say so,but all the other forums say otherwise.

At £600 a set he wished he had never got the car!
 
We have the Q7 4.2 V8 TDI S line but not with the lowest profile tyres, I was advised that the smaller wheel would give better tyre wear especially as we use for towing. Can't say I notice any handling difference either.

Tyre wear is a known issue, but its a great car. Even the 3 litre is fast, and you ahve a compromise between handling and tyre wear. If you buy the cars performance you have to buy the tyres!

I passed on your info about the tracking etc:

He said Audi had done it all,still the same tyre wear.

I think he is trading it in?

Had test drive's in ML's,X5's and VW's the weekend.

Tyre wear seems to be a known problem with the quattro (permanent four wheel drive) system.

I tow with a lowly 1.9tdi A4 Avant quattro sport with 235/45 17"

tyres.

On the original Continentals and subsequent Michelin Sports I got 11,000-12,000 miles per set of four (rotating to equalize wear)This was apparently due to the soft rubber on the supplied sport tyres.

I now fit BF Goodrich tyres.These are the same size,but as a non-premium tyre have harder rubber.I get 18,000-20,000 miles per set of four.I am told that Michelin own BF Goodrich and the tyres utilise a carcass off an earlier version of the Michelin sport.Either way I get a set of 4 for
 
you pay the money you take the choice - big heavy towcar, soft rubber for grip, bound to wear out. Showing my age but in the early eighties Pirelli P6s on sports cars would to 3/400 miles maximum, but brilliant grip whilst fresh - the joys of motoring!

Not quite true, I have a Toyota Landcruiser (2300Kg) and I got about 60000 miles from the fronts and 80000 from the back on the previous car and am heading that way with this one (just under 6mm on fronts and over 7mm on rear at 25000 miles done).

But I do agree with 'you pay your maney and make your choices' and once paid you have to live with them!!
 
Sorry to come back to this, but the Q7 compared to Landcruiser and some others is like comparing a thorobred race horse to muffin the mule. Something has to give and its the tyres!
 
2 plus tons of car that will hurl itself off the line to 60 in 6 seconds or the 3litre diesel that does the same in around 9 and what would you expect really.

Driven with moderation you leave many cars and sports cars for dead.

and im sure you dont drive the car like this?

he doesnt expect to get through tyres like he does at the speeds that he does.
 
To be honest not a lot of good having a 120mph plus car in the Uk,but you could say that about most cars.

I can see power and performance are your thing,my little 1 lt would give you a good run for your money if you could keep up?
 
The comparison was speed related Alan and I think you can see that I refered to the Q7 as the thorobred, mine sure aint mule like though they are good pack animals.

And we owm two at present.

If I read that to be your "1 litre" Micheal I guess you are either a biker or deluded ;-) I'm a Ducati man myself.

I like an abundance of power under my right foot or hand, my choice and my business! Plenty of family hacks will do 120 mph plus, so am I bovvered?

Michaels does have a valid point.

There is little point buying a very high performance car purely for speed in the U.K.. Yes, it will roar away at the lights only to brake hard at the traffic laden speed camera infested roundabout some 600 yds down the road.

No one liked speed more than me, I was a race engineer and test driver for 16 yrs driving formula ford 0-60 3.5 secs/155mph with your ass 3" from the floor. Also I was fortunate to drive a fully race tuned 650 bhp RS200 Group B rally car which was truly amazing (until they were banned).

Anyway, back to my point. I would asume most people buy performance cars not just for the speed but for the comfort, leather and electronic toys.

I am an oldish person now who cares more for how little i'm handing over to the petrol (well actually Diesel)forecourt cashier than proving a point by racing a boy racer off the lights in his Citroen Saxo.

Oh my god.....I'm sounding more like my elders every day.

That FF must have been good, faster more or less than 2008 Dallara F3 car with AMG engine ;-)

RS200 was an awesome car and in the hands of my old pal Martin Schanche breath taking, but my favourite drive was 6r4.

Those were the days my friend.

Let's just say I'm not growing old with out kicking.
 
I have a Q7. Audi shared the cost of new front tyres at 11000 miles. After much discussion on the Audi Forum and with dealer mechanics we have set the tyre pressure at 40lbs front and back - seems to be working so far. I also noted in the handbook it recommends that you set the pressures to max - tried that - too hard. I suggest you ignore the 35lbs settings from the fuel tank guide - way too low.

Also - have my original rears still - at 17000 miles.

Just got back from 3000 miles trip to Italy - brilliant. Comfortable and fast - with circa 30mpg. Do for me.
 
The Goodyear Excellence tyres on our S-max were replaced after just 14k front 25k rear, we replaced them with continental sportcontact 2's, so far the fronts have done 18k and will need replacing by about 20k.
