Hi Patrick,

I tow with a Mondeo auto. When I first got it I enquired with my Ford dealer as to whether I would need a oil cooler fitted to the gearbox. I was very suprised when the machanic said that Ford fit them as standard & if I towed within the vehicles towing limits & had the gear box oil changed at the correct service intervals there would be no problems with the gear box over heating. I can say I have towed over to France twice, cornwall, Devon, Snowdonia & many weekends away & never had any sign of the gearbox over heating. So I think you should be fine, so long as you stay within the limits & service it regular.

Cheers Stean

Hello Patrik

whilst what Stean says may be true for the mondeo, do not assume it will be correct for all fords.

The only answer you can rely on would be from a Ford dealer, or the manufacture direct. Forums are often visited by well meaning people who do not always have the right answers.

Hi patrick I ran a VW Sharan 1.9 TD auto, damm good tow car, no you dont need an oil cooler as they are standard fit as already stated.

Dont know how long you have had your car but alot of people knock the auto, mine was on a V plate, had it from new and never had a problem with the auto box, dispite doing galactic mileage.

Hi,

Not sure if this helps you, but we have a Seat Alhambra - 2004, with a 1.9 TDi and 5 speed tiptronic auto box. This does not have any extra oil cooler and is fine when towing.

It may also apply only to certain engine variants, although, on the whole, towing is normally possible without technical modifications, other than fitting a towbar, of course. However, the exception proves the rule. I know of at least one model which requires changes to the body front end sheet metal panel to allow for more air circulation before one may use it as a towcar.
