Has anyone been to High Range in Aviemore? What are the facilities like and are they really pricey. I have 2 younge teenagers and a puppy, is there much in the area that would suit them - eg, swiming pools, parks. Can you walk into town from the site? Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Audrey

We stayed at High Range for a week after new year in January.

In general we really enjoyed it, the facilities are second to none, seriously clean and all the mod cons. The Italien restaurant advertised on their website is lovely, really nice food and a 2 minute walk from the pitches.

One thing to note is the metering system for water and electric. You need to buy tokens at the reception, every water point uses a card meter as does the EHU points. You slip the card in and press a button to make it go. The staff do tend to underestimate the amount of tokens you need and I had to push to get them to sell me some more so I wasn't left high and dry through the night. You need 2 cards to fill an aquaroll, so best to use the shower facilities on site if you're heavy water users. Although it sounds complicated and a bit worrying it's not too bad.

Town is a 5 minute walk from the site, just turn left from the site and walk down the road and don't turn off.

I'm not too sure about facilities in the area as we didn't need them at the time we were there but hopefully someone else can tell you that. And prices in the park; I've been to cheaper certainly, it's not out of the box price wise at all and we are usually on a strict budget if you know what I mean!

Hopefully you'll enjoy it - do let us know.

Cheers

Nick

High Ridge is fine except for some road noise immediately behind the high hedge. Facilities were first class except for no grey waste water disposal point!! I felt the token system for electricty and water just a tad on the stingy side. The good news is the owners Italian restaurant at the entrance to the site. First class food and friendly staff. Stayed there may 2006.

Cheers Alan

Aviemore really needs a great site

I would stay at Grantown-on-spey site and travel through to Aviemore. The hotel at colymbridge has a indoor playbarn for wet days, and Landmark at Carrbridge will keep the kids amused all day.

Hi

We have stayed at High Range in Aviemore a couple of times as my daughter's boyfriend is a sailing instructor at Loch Insh (about 7 miles South of Aviemore) - worth a visit as your teenagers would enjoy it (sailing, kayaking, canoeing, archery and a dry ski slope are some of the activities).

There is a swimming pool in the Aviemore centre and there are loads of walks nearby for your puppy.

Aviemore is essentially a holiday village so you should find plenty for your teenagers to do.

As stated elsewhere the site is only a few minutes walk from Aviemore centre.

As regards the site itself I can only echo previous posts and would add my tuppence worth about the tokens for water and electricity - its not the cost I objected to (it actually isn't that dear) but just the hassle factor that I didn't like.

Apart from that the site is small but very well kept and the Italian Restaurant on site is excellent. Also I think there is a minimum stay (3 nights I think) but I am not sure if that only applies to the high season.

The site is only a few miles from Cairngorm National Park and you can take the Fenicular (I hope that's how its spelt) railway up the Mountain - although you have to prearrange it if you want to get out and walk when you get to the top.

If you decide to go I am sure you will enjoy it. The scenery around Aviemore is breathtaking.

Cheers

Richard

High Range might be noisy as A9 runs right behind. You can easily walk into town.

On the other hand my all time favourite site is Glenmore (Forestry Commission)by Loch Morlich at the foot of the Cairngorms.OK you have to drive into Aviemore, but the setting is fantastic

We visit Aviemore every summer, we always stay at Rothiemurchus site which is about 20 minute walk from Aviemore and the facilities are 1st rate. We always request a pitch in the forest area where they have put in a new toilet and shower block .

As for amenities at Aviemore there used to be a swimming pool and ice rink but when the complex closed they were demolished, there is plenty of walks around , plus the steam railway, you also have the highland heritage centre at Kingusie (about 10 miles south and another centre (forgot its name ) at Carr bridge. The Cairngorms are also worth visiting and take a ride on the funicular railway to the top, interestingly the station at the top is cut into the mountain and therefore the highest underground station in Britain (if not the world).

There is plenty to see and do in the area and part of the fun is searching it out.
