It didn't work for me :O( I just looked and smelled like a greasy ponce.

I was told Marmite worked so after smearing that all over exposed flesh I looked like a chocolate walnut whip. I was like a mobile fly paper with midges stuck all over me. hehheh! only joking :OP

Seriously though I read that eating Marmite keeps them at bay.

My wife eats Marmite, I hate the stuff. I get bitten, she doesn't. I'll leave you to make your mind up.

Helen, try Avon " Skin so Soft". We where told that the gamekeepers use it but wont admit it. Worked last year for us. If you look on Avons web site there are a No of products in ths range pick which you prefer, we got body wash and moisteriser, Bazz.

Thanks for all your comments. I have ordered some soft and fresh for my hubby today as they are highly attracted to him. I have also put a pot of marmite in the van...

O would have thought Lady B. would have eaten garlic to keep the "vampires" away. Lord B. it was the Viagra the midges were attracted to.

Ummmm colin ... it's the females that bite, something to do with needing blood for the developement of their eggs so it's not Viagra they need, it's the pill to stop them ovulating. If they don't ovulate they then won't need my blood. Hmmmmm I wonder if the Boffins have thought of that. I might write a thesis on my philosophy and patent it. :O)

This was in a leaflet........

You can help avoid midge bites by taking Vitamin B1.It emits an odour through the pores,not detectable to humans,but the insect recognises you as a vegetable rather than human.Take 300-500mg of B1 daily.

I am guessing that marmite has vitamin B as an ingredient,but what sort of a vegetable Lord B turns into when smeared with the stuff is anybody's guess

Just had three weeks in Scotland, the midges were absolute hell! About the worse we have known them at this time of year!

The Avon stuff does nothing for me personally, but I can recommend Jungle Formula extra strength which certainly keeps the little b*****s away!

I always thought the midges were in areas of forest or peatland where it's damp but at Carradale they were on the beach. If I was a Jock I couldn't put up with that year after year, no wonder about 50% of Scots live south of the border, I too would be among them.

Stopping at Englethwaite Hall on the way up and back we met lots of Jocks. Meanwhile at Carradale Bay the ones we met were mainly English. Theres got to be a moral to the story there somewhere ... hehheh!.... we head north to get bitten to hell while they head south to escape them.

In all honesty I can't see me going back, nothing is worth putting myself through that. Each night I became paranoid, going around the van looking for the sods and squashing them. I could tell if they had already bitten me if when squashed they were red with my blood, payback time :O) First thing in the morning was to wash the corpses off the ceiling so it would make it easier to spot them the following night. I've still got purple blotches on me from when the *****s bit me 2 years ago :O(

Give me a mozzie anytime, at least you have a chance with them buggers. You can at least see or hear them. Midges are the top of my hate list of biting insects. I did Google midges once and there are 100s of species and it said the Scottish midge is the most *voracious*, their words, not mine.

Apart from their larvae helping to break down decaying matter why did Noah let them off the Ark. Birds don't eat them and they are even too small for a spiders meal :O(

Oh well, rant over, Au Revoir Scotland ... hehheh!

For your information George I don't even know where the term came from. People in England very often refer to the name Jock, but not in a derogatory way. The Jocks refer to us, the English as Sassenachs and again I have no knowledge of what it means, just that its a name referring to us. Unlike yourself though I don't care what you call me so my toys stay in my pram ;O)

and that's even if you call us 'the b^$t^rd english',

It's all do do with acting like adults :O)

Hi lord Braykewynde,

Where does that name originate from, I knew you where in for a rough time when i found out through this Forum, where you were headed.

I too visited Scotland in May but headed for Blair Drummond, nice site saw my first wild red Squirrels there.

After a few days a couple turned up the wife had the red blotches on her face and neck, they had just come south from where you stayed and the midges where out in force there.

Turned out they lived in a parallel road to ours back home ,A road that we never have need to go down.

Mentioned to you before that I love Marmite , but the midges when around still attack me with vengence.

This year we bought a bug blaster,Thank goodness we had no need to use it, Not quite sure the reaction of our Kerry Blue Terrier, when the insects hit the blaster.

What's a bug blaster Royston? Is it one of those thingy mebobs with a blue light that electrocutes them? If so I have one of those and put it on every night, even leaving it on. In the morning when I took the bottom off to see if I'd killed any there were a few in there, but still alive. Only thing I could think of is they are so small they missed the electric coil that zapped them. I did have a couple of mozzies though :O)

Regarding the Marmite you are proof it isn't true.I tell Her Ladyship they only go for good meat.

FAO George. I've just been talking to an online friend who is a moderator on the same game site as myself. I asked him if by me calling a Scot Jock it was insulting to them. His reply was no, not at all, infact the rank and file of Scottish regiments are known as Jock.

This goes to confirm my belief that someone had definitely peed in your cornflakes that morning :O)

Please feel free though to continue calling us 'the b^$t^rd english', after all it's only a name and names don't upset me ;O)
