Just did a search on X3 before I sent in a similar question.

Not planning it yet, but does anyone tow with one of these?

Hi guys, I towed with a three litre petrol X3, and have to say I was a tad disappointed. Although it was highly rated as a tow car in the compact 4x4 sections of the mags, I found the ride, especially fore/aft pitching quite uncomfortable and rear sear passengers agreed. You always knew you were towing because of the tugging motion and the 75k nose limit is disappointing in such a vehicle. I pulled 1600k max weight and had no problem with power - perhaps I expect too much, but I don't have the same issues with my current 4x4...

Ever since it was introduced, the X3 has had a reputation of not being a comfortable car because of the very firm suspension.

Clarkson said the X3 was for people who are clinically insane.

He criticized it for harsh ride, lots of plastic and poor off-road ability when he took one into a "not very tough" off-road trail.

Good thing is if you can live with that they will be cheep.

good point...avoid the Sport models and larger wheels...otherwise i didn't find the ride (solo) too bad.

Hi there eveyone since i first posted back in oct 2007 i have bought a X3 2.0d and can honestly say it's brill the firm suspension may be an issue for some but not for me,if anything it helps with stability, it holds the rode superb and pulls like a train.

The car does pitch but no worse than any other car i've towed with.

Hi Sean

I take it youre glad you made the choice. Our 320d Touring has sports suspension, so we're used to firm ride.

What's fuel economy like, both solo and towing?

Hi Ken,

I am very pleased with my X3, i have a power chip on so the bhp is 180 which is an increase of 30bhp and the torque has also gone up aswell,as for fuel consumption i get about 29/30 around town solo with the chip, without about 26 towing a 1500k Bailey Virginia about 24/25 i don't hang around so driven carefully it could be better, pulling the van is a breeze with this car i'm surprised you don't see more towing.

One problem i do have is other motorist not only do they not like B.M.W drivers but a beemer with a caravan on stands no chance of getting out of junction's etc.

Hope this helps.

Hi sean

I totaly agree I have an X3 2.0D SE 150bhp and Im towing an ace award morning star which is around 1550kg and the power is superb, when you come to hills you can not tell its on the back.when I first went to buy it my first choice was the sport but the sales man told me if I was towing I would be better with rhe SE as he had towed with both and he said the SE was a better ride so I took his advice and Im glad I did because Im realy happy with it

Phil
