B&Q market place

I have recently purchased some dog food from B&Q who now have a range of external market place suppliers who supply goods that are well outside of what is B&Qs normal range. The dog food was considerably cheaper than other offerings, dispatches very quickly and quite surprisingly it was transported via Amazon so good communication on its dispatch and delivery. An ever changing commercial world.

Notice Skinners, at B&Q £17.27 for 2.5kg. Amazon , £31.19 for 15kg. Cheaper ?
I never said everything was cheaper, as it’s not even like that on Amazon. But 50 whimzees M/L rice bones were £35 considerably cheaper than many others. It often tge case with dog foods that smaller quantities are proportionally more expensive, so you are not comparing like for like. I buy Chudleys at 15 kg vat free. Like most things I shop around as prices change.

If we did all our shopping at Amazon or B&Q our little local High Street would disappear and we would become another dormitory Town .
A lovely lady, Barbs, has run our local pet shop for 40 years. She may not be as cheap as B&Q but I know she always stocks what we need. By the time I’ve driven to a major store and wasted time and fuel I doubt there is much cost difference.

Support your local shops👍👍

But I didn’t drive to BQ it’s part of their online offering. You’ve hit the nail on the head though as I find driving to local stores often results in disappointment as I cannot find what I require. Then there are the fuel costs and invariably parking charges too. So then I have no option but to fall back to the online offerings. Most of my shopping is online, but my wife still ventures out for her weekly visit to the town center, but I haven’t a clue what she does though.

You’re lucky ! I do most of the domestic shopping. Early Monday mornings I meet a lot of local chaps who count it as there little outing🤪. Monday morning is great for Tesco bargains👍

Out of town shopping malls and retail parks, caused a decline in town centre shops. Now on line shopping is hitting them as well.

By the way...what are local shops?😁

Not sure about that as this week I looked for a new AGM battery for the Jeep. I could get a Bosch from Tayna for about £159. fitting about £60. Went local to a garage with good reviews. They wanted £329 for the same battery incl fitting. Eventually they dropped the price to £239 which I accepted. They fitted the battery.

I then inquired about changing the smaller aux AGM 12v battery which on Tayna was about £50. They quoted me £189 for the same battery incl fitting and would not budge on the price. I declined their kind offer even though I still need the battery. I would fit it myself if it was in a normal place, but it is under the driver's seat and awkward to access the bolts as need a long extension for the rachet. It also has the square terminal where the "tower" id fitted for where the nut screws down onto it.

In our village every month we get a small newsletter in the shape of a book which has numerous ads for local trades people. In the past we have contacted some of them and IF they reply to a message left on their phone, they have silly prices.

I live near a small town that has a range of independent and some chain stores. I do my best to support local businesses but am increasingly finding that if a shop closes it is replaced by a cafe, charity shop or a pet accessory store ( we now have 3 of these in a small high street!). They don’t sell actual pet food. Who buys all this clobber I don’t know but clearly people do.
Anyway, I digress. My point is that the range of shops in a town centre that is doing well in comparison to some, is narrowing rapidly. Hence you can no longer get everything you want in a trip to town so trek off to Out of Town places or supermarkets or go online instead and it becomes a vicious cycle.

Also more and more retailers seem to be turning to Amazon-esque strategies and trying to supply all things to all people. B and Q being one of them.

What’s strange about my most recent order on BQ for pet bits is that it came from a company called Pet Central. They used Amazon logistics as their delivery coordinator but it was Royal Mail who actually delivered it. Talk about fingers in the pie.

For things like that, I have things delivered directly to my local trusted independent workshop and pay them to fit - my Touareg battery is hard to get at, under the front passenger seat so I regarded £72 labour as money well spent as I still saved £120 on the VW dealer's fitted price

I was happy to pay the £68 labour charge for the main battery, but think it is a bit excessive for the small aux battery which is easy to reach with the correct tool.

And every one of those fingers takes a commission! No wonder goods are over priced!
But the strange thing is that via the BQ Marketplace delivery was inclusive and the total price was significantly less than other offerings from other suppliers, most of whom charged for delivery. So how much are they making on a sale. And the dog treats were well in date by a couple of years so not old stock. One significant advantage of internet purchases is the ease of comparing offerings.

But with your reputation of claiming on CRA 2015 and other things , they are building in a cost to cover themselves. No offence meant.
