In todays news there an article about a Whistleblower who has been dismissed from JLR. He was part of a TATA design team working on designs of VINFAST cars for a Vietnamese company. The cars had a number of issues that led him to question safety. In the US the national transport safety agency are also concerned. Because no action was being taken to correct the perceived faults the design engineer resigned. He then took an appointment at JLR but latterly was dismissed and he believes it was because of his previous attempts on Reddit to highlight his concerns over VINFAST.

However the headline makes big the issue being with “ electric cars”. Yes the vehicles affected are EV but the detail of the article doesn’t describe any electric powertrain or battery issues. Bad mechanical design, poor manufacture and software issues. All of which could just as easily affect ICE cars.

Well you mentioned EV,s 3 times in your post.
Once actually EV is mentioned , plus "electric cars"

Thats because the BBC headlines focused on the whistleblower who was employed doing mechanical l design on Vietnamese EVs. Going by the article's headline you would think it was a problem associated with it being electrically propelled but it wasn't.

There I've mentioned "EV" again. Hope that doesn't cause angst.

There's a problem in the automobile world - in China the timescale to design/develop new cars is much quicker that the rest of the world and other manufacturers are trying to emulate this, leading to short cuts.

In the case in point, it's suspension parts and mounting points that failed at low mileages during testing of Vietnamese EVs at MIRA, near Nuneaton.

Many car buyers are shrewd enough not to buy a new model but wait until it's been in production a few years - with the headlong rush to new technology that's goint to be difficult.

I wonder if this is what the basement bargain or a dog🤔.
I thought all pure EVs were auto😉
No one can complain about its ability to knock up a high mileage in a relatively short time. BZ to ZS Despite the advert statement it’s out of warranty on mileage.

Add says its Auto in a few places. What are you querying? Rotary gear selection is PRND. Levers aren’t cool any longer, as per handbrakes too.

The MG is very expensive for its mileage. Locally we had a I3 and Leaf at that price with less than half the mileage and only a couple of years older. This one linked below as I3?could do someone nicely as a local run about, or longer trips with charging.

If we traded in the Corolla for the above vehicle which does seem a good deal, we would be worse off, but that applies to any ICE vehicle however no extra cost for a charging station. At present still better for us to stick with the ICE vehicle due to low maintenance costs.

The latest MG EVs come with a7 year battery warranty. Presumably Kia’s legendary 7 year warranty also includes the battery?
Such a warranty from the manufacturer does have an attraction for purchasing a used model.

When selling can the warranty be transferred?

Kia batteries are 8 yrs or 70%. Toyota warranty the battery for 15 years providing you have the car serviced annually by a Toyota dealership. The car and powertrain have a 10 years warranty again subject to annual Toyota servicing. The warranty can be established even on a car that may have a gap in its service history. Take it to Toyota have it serviced, have any defects sorted, and you are ready to go. One of the reasons we bought a RAV4 hybrid. If you present on the day before the 10 th anniversary of first registration and have it serviced you have warranty extended to 11 years or 110000 miles.

My Kia was warranted for 7 years from purchase. It was one year old at purchase so the warranty went to 2029 for me. Had I sold it privately or traded it to a Kia dealer a new owner would have received all the benefits to 2029 including infotainment updates. But since I part exchanged it to another dealership any subsequent owner has the standard Kia 7 years from first registration iE 2028 not 2029.

Just to be clear - P, R, N and D are not "gears". There are no gears. The motor is directly attached to the diff or wheels. P turns it off and applies parking break. N may de-energise the motor or electromagnets. D and R control the direction the motor turns.

Usually if you need to push an EV, it will have a "tow mode" that will disable the brakes and take the motors out of circuit.

My comment wrt “rotary gear selection” related to the selling advert which described the rotary knob that enabled the standard auto modes to be selected.

Although very unwise can you coast an EV in neutral?
