Hi-I've got a 2003 Bailey Moselle.Back in the summer the water wasn't getting hot from the truma ultrastore water heater when running off the electric but would heat up when run off gas,Thought the problem was with the water heater element so put a new one on and still the electrics trip.I can feel the water getting warm for the short time until it trips off so elements ok,i've checked the wiring up of the element and is wired in correctly and replaced the fuse on the water heater switch.Spent all weekend trying to sort it out now it's driving me round the bend PLEASE HELP!!!!

i have had a look at the wiring diagram for a 2004 pageant, that is in the manuel for my 2004 senator, so i am making the assumption that the wiring has not changed from 2003.

Firstly your cb could be faulty, or it could be overloading so tripping.

The CB on my drawing is 5amp, shown as the LHS one, this feeds two mains lights, the power supply or charger, the fridge, and the heater.

So if the CB is healthy, any of these four could be the problem,

The heater takes 2 amp warming up.

I would consider changing the CB for a new one.

Or put a multimeter in circuit to read the current, you would need a meter that reads 10 amp, to give you a margin. And be competent to know how to use it.

Or try to isolate the problem be removing some of the wires from the outgoing side of the 5a CB, i would disconnect the charger first, make sure the removed wire is insulated.

sorry not to be of much help, but as you have found out, sometimes things can be more complicated that expected. I was surprised to see so much of a 5amp CB.

Hello Andy,

I concur with Ray's diagnosis. As you have asked the question it strongly suggests that you are not entirely familiar with electrical circuits, so I strongly recommend you have it professionally checked.

Incidentally looking at the components that ray lists as being on the 5A circuit, when they all work they will use very close to 5A so that is fine.

Thx Ray-When we were away last summer when it happened i seem to think the hot water was working fine for a couple of days until it went, but i don't think it tripped outlike it's doing now i think i just turned off the switch for the water heater and ran the hot water off gas and still used the electric. Now it still trips out when the switch is off!.The thought i've just had is that the submersible pump seems to be leaking a little bit when connected to the socket on the outside of the van which has to brass connecting strips on the side i wonder if when they get water on them it would cause the tripping although the pump does work?. I've dried it off and left overnight and will try again.

Thx John L- what do you both think about the reply i've posted at the bottom of Ray's reply. If that does not work i'll call a professional as need it working for Easter, but i'm convinced thet it's something simple that i'm overlooking.

The pump is 12v and protected by a blade fuse. It will not produce the symptoms you are describing.

There is a remote possibility that the pump could be the problem. Although the pump is 12v, using it will take a load from either the battery or power supply. To eliminate it remove the 240v power from the power supply, the pump will only then draw from the battery, assuming you have one?

It would be useful if you could confirm that you are dealing with a 5amp CB, feeding four circuits, look in the back pages of the manuel, start from the consumer unit and trace the circuits from the lhs 5amp CB, then we know that your wiring is the same as mine.

But by switching off you water heater, you have hopefully eliminated that as the problem.

Hi Ray-On the RCD there are 2 breakers 1 6A which supplies the lights, water heater and Charger .The other breaker(which is the 1 that keeps tripping)is 10A which supplies Fire,Fridge and Aux Sockets. Then the block next to those is the isolater main switch.Had a mobile caravan chap round and he suggested that i change the 10A breaker which i did and guess what?,it still trips.I think the pump is ok as the green light works on run and can hear the water coming through.

Sorry i was unable to help. You would have been better calling a electrician, he would of found the faulty circuit.

Let us know the outcome.

Hi,Sorry for the delay in getting back. The problem in the end was that i forgot that the previous owner had had fitted a diy external socket underneath the van, when i came to test the water heater after replacing the element i hadn't disconnected the water filter and because it had been left on all winter it had split so when i switched the water on water was leaking and had gone into the external socket which had a weatherproof cover on which was holding the water in.So now i've replaced the socket to the side of the van!!.Thanks anyway for all your comments.
