Hi all,

We went to the Caravan show on Friday in the hope of purchasing a new caravan. We are Bailey Senator owners but found, not surprisingly, that the Bailey stand was made up of mostly Pegasus and Pageants with only two Senators to view. The Bailey people we spoke to (not dealers)said that they had brought all the Pegasus ranges because that was the model they were trying to push.

We had seen a Pegasus a couple of weeks ago at a dealers and were not impressed then. Looking at the vans at the NEC I think that Bailey had rushed them out because the finish was very poor. I agree with Mikey in respect to the ABS trim panels at the front and rear bottom edges - they are so flimsy and poorly fixed and wont't last long. The ABS is so thin you could see the glow of the number plate lamp through it, the soft pvc jointing strip was gaping and will definately discolour over time. The interiors are not a patch on the Senator and most of the other vans at the NEC were head and shoulders above the Pegasus.

Most people we spoke to weren't concerned with the 10 year warranty and many questioned how the servicing guys would be carrying out the 3-year torquing up of the wall panel bolt systems.

We fail to see how the magazines and Clubs are 'raving' over the Pegasus - is it a touch of "The Emporors New Clothes" ? Yes the concept of the panel system is good but you can see where they run out of ideas on how to treat the corner details - have a look at the rear top corner where they have mitered the aluminium extrusion, they cover the joint by a small, what looks like plastic, patch which seemed to be fixed by mastic. The Pegasus looks cheap and on looks alone cannot compare with any other van at the show, with the exception of the Stealth that had a similar body structure - and what a mess that was !

Well, we left the NEC very tired, money still in our pocket despite being very tempted by the Coachman Pastiche and VIP range. If we had more time (closing time was upon us) the salesman from Wandahome may have got a sale of the VIP 545 but his luck ran out as it was time to go.

We have now decided to wait until the new year and see what is about then. If Bailey change their mind about the Senator range and continue it next year we may retain our allegiance - we will have to wait and see.

We visited the show on Tuesday at the NEC, mainly to look at the new Pegasus. Personally I like the look the black locker box gives it a air of difference and the LED lights that bit of bling. We gave plenty of time to the 534 as we originally looking at the Senator California. We spoke with several dealers who were present. One confirmed to me that YES it was replacing the Senator series which they will stop making in week 49 of 2010. Cannot be any more precise than that. Until then they will be pushing the Pegasus. I was very impressed with the innovation and safety features standard on this caravan. The inboard tank can be removed but it can also be left where it is and filled via and aquaroll. As with all caravans there are some thing each of us would change or alter to suit ourselves. With this van for me I would add another aerial point next to the front socket and give it a name. Numbers dont work for me.

It is a new way to build caravans it will have its naysayers but like someone else said above ereryone wrote off the Sierra but now all cars look that way. Well Bailey have dragged caravan production into the 21st century and if anyone buys anything other than a Pegasus your buying old tech, last years thing, your buying a betamax. Well done Bailey and the 534 is a well deserved Caravan of the year!

Interesting point of the buying a Betamax Red Ken,the Betamax was the better product!

The Pegasus looks cheap inside and you seem to be paying for the body technology

Hi Mikey

No I disagree I think the Pegasus looks clean modern and stylish. It will be easy to clean and care for. And with regard to the Betamax I was measuring it against a Blu-ray.

Time will tell Ken.

To be honest it looks like any other white caravan with stuck on extra bits, but very much bull nose, over the years vans have become angled and more aerodynamic Bailey have gone back to how vans use to look.Bailey are very much a production line company build as many as possible, the new model will be quicker to build.

I think the split is 50 50

I cant get my head around you comparing betamax with blue ray?

There is a difference of over 20 years.

Betamax was the better product but Sony wouldnt release the patent whereas JVC did on VHS,meaning more VHS video players than betamax.

Sony learnt by their mistake and released the Blue ray format to everyone forcing HD DVD from Toshiba out of the market.

They should call it the bailey marmite

Just been looking at the small print of the Pegasus warranty on Bailey web site as Bailey dealer advised and very surprised. It only comes as standard with a 6 year damp cover and years 6 to 10 are chargable!! Up to now the extra 4 years has been free but it appears this may not be the case in the future. More worrying is that any leaks around windows, doors roof lights etc are excluded after the initial 3 years. I feel sorry for anyone who has just bought without being aware of this and its high servicing costs, year 2

Are you referring to section 12(e), if you are I think you'll find it means through the actual aperature seals which are non permanent. i.e. if you don't close either window, door or rooflight properly. Or if a seal breaks down and you have it repaired.

I would think that the actual sealing to the caravan is classed as permanent.

In which case it applies to any make, have you checked any others warranty cover to this depth?

There is a response from Bailey themselves, to the question of warranty and the Pegasus under another posting. It might clarify things to have a look there.

The caravan press are raving over the Pegasus because as they need the advertising, hence no bad press i.e. "its been hit with the ugly stick", the Pegasus will leak as the mastic will dry out, as there is no wood in construction or hard board walls and ceilings damage will be minimal, hence 10 year warranty.

Well, Pegasus eh?

The interior on the one we looked at didn't impress at all. It seemed a bit cheap and sanitised with all the white interior walls. The overhead lockers were fitted with heavy duty hinges but the actual 'door fasteners' were plastic and I doubt would last very long at all. Many of the screws were obvious, having lost the plastic caps. The tiny shelf above the door was hanging lose. The backsplash at the rear of the sink, worktop and hob appeared to be fixed with double sided tape!

I was informed, true or not, that the body shell screws would have to be inspected every 3 years in order to keep the warranty.

The outside looked OK at the rear and sides, but the front with that strange locker box finish (hope no stones get thrown up from the road!) and silly little lit grab handles looked ghastly. The so-called wet lockers at each front off-side wouldn't hold much.

Not impressed I'm afraid.
