Hi all

My Bailey Ranger went in for its 2nd service from new this week.

Bad news Damp in each corner top/front of caravan. The chap who did the damp test said these tend to suffer with damp in the corners at the top were the roof seals are. I wish i had known this before purching the caravan. I know its under warranty but it should not be getting damp just yet.

Hi Stephen, sorry to hear your news.I know how you are feeling as the same thing happened to me, Mine was the rear panel, It took quite a while to get the new panel fitted, Do not think it applies only to Rangers, the problem is across the board I have met people with Pageants and Senators who have fallen fowl of the same problems, me after my van had a new rear panel I offloaded it,to me it still was damaged goods waiting for the other panel to fail.Do not get fogged of with a repair to the panel insist on a new one I had to go via their MD to get mine replaced.Best of luck.

My sentor had a damp corner, also found at its second service. Bailey took about 6 months to take it in, and fitted a new roor and back panel.

The good news is that it was completly dry at the third service so they seem to have done a good job. I have heard that once they've been done once they should be OK - something to do with larger holes for the screws through the ABS panels.

I don't understand why people are so anti the pegasus - if they'd had the trauma of a major damp repair at two years old they'd welcome the new technology!

Hi Again

The thing i find a bit testing is the dealer knows of the problems and told me that the flat roof with the two seals back and front of the bailey range is always giving problem right through the range. In his opinion its a very bad design fault. He said the water just lays on the roof being flat and the poor seals do not stand any chance of staying water tight. Plus the front/rear panels being plastic the roof being alloy they fight each other summer which adds to the the leaking and spliting problems.

Sorry to go on i am a bit down in the dumps.

Hi Stephen, Your not on your own with this problem, unfortunatly we share this with loads of other Bailey owners,As Timothy mentioned it is a traumatic experence when you are told that your van has a major fault, pity your dealer did not mention this prior to purchase.

The only answer that Baileys can offer is the new Pegasus model, but I have reservations with regards to the build .

My Dealer is playing safe he is introducing Swift vans alongside his present Bailey range.

Hi

Our Pageant Bretangue is going back to Bailey in February for a new panel - cracks found on servicing which has caused damp. There are a number of us who have had issues with damp and cracks in panels, has been mentioned on this forum in the past. Our previous van a swift, an older van had damp in a corner which we had repaired by a dealer, van was fine after.

The magazines tell you how great they are because Bailey is very generous in it's press hospitality and has been for some years, this is why it wins so much! At the end of the day they are what they are for a reason, cheap and light but at a cost.

Sorry to hear you have been sold a substandard product, that's due to poor installation and QC, as i see it.

I had a new panel fitted to our new Avondale bought back in 1997, so i understand how you feel.

But i have to say my 2004 bailey senator is as dry as a bone, so don't assume readers, that all baileys have this problem, they don't.

My problem is the fridge failing 3 times !!, the 240v element once again.

We bought a new Bailey Ranger a couple of months ago and have had our second trip in it over New Year. We had a great time and are relaly pleased about buying a caravan for the 1st time. However, I saw this topic about damp and we noticed in our caravan that in the back left hand corner there was a lot of condensation on the ceiling, but not in the right hand corner above the bunk. We didn't level up completely and were very slightly tilting onto the left side. We did have loads of rain on the first couple of days and I was concerned about rain settling on the roof.

Would this condensation cause damp? From the inside out? (when i ran my hand across the ceiling there was a lot of water there!). I'm assuming this wasn't a leak.

Any tips for beating this condensation? We did open the windows slightly but it was FREEZING and with 3 small children it was difficult to do this.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks

you should not get condesation if you are in it with constant heat ,not to the amount that you have stated,is this in the shower or a open part of caravan.

Hi

It's in an open part of the caravan. We have got 3 fixed bunks on the right at the back with high level shelving in the left hand corner. You can see little droplets of condensation above these shelves on the roof and when you run your hand across a small part it drips down your fingers. I hope that gives you an idea of how much condensation there is. Also, as I said before, It wasn't on the right hand corner, just the left. My husband also noticed it in the front of the caravan, also on the ceiling, on the left hand side in the high level cupboard. This is all after a night in the van with 5 of us and the heating on very low. Should i now be worried??

if its on the side the rain water was on ie the left it could be condensation due to the extrem outside temp. This could lead to cold spots inside, where warm air meets because of the lockers there may be poor air flow.try it at home if you can with heat to see if you can reconstruct the problem .If you are in doubt contact your dealer it still quiet new .

With five of you in the van, ( all breathing ) depending on how warm it was inside & how cold it was overnight outside, if you only have the heating on low and the van roof is cold you will get condensation, but to get it in only certain areas..! you will have to keep an eye on it, & the next time you are away see if it happens again in the same areas, a thermometer will give you an idea how warm your van is.

Did the areas were you had the droplets feel really cold compared to other parts of the roof ..?

I know, I did think it odd to only get it in a couple of places on the inside. The windows were really wet though so maybe that's an indication of how much condensation was produced overnight. I think i'll have to check this out on our next trip - hopefully in February.

Thanks for your advice. I will contact our dealer i'm still concerned about the problem.

Thanks!

was your heater on gas all the time or blown air you may get condensation from the gas heat/if so try the hot blown air.

Was the condensation near to where most of you sleep? Or where you may have been boiling the spuds?

Touch wood all my Baileys have been bone dry. However the current Wyoming has the well documented aluminium window frames which generate condensation like water from a tap.

Keep an eye on it next time you are out.

Agree with Dean you should use the air blower with say 500w heat setting at night.

Cheers

Shelley, we have a "cold" spot in our van. Its in the rear bathroom far corner. Only get it in cold weather and untill the van warms up.

We wee out over new year and used the blown air heating the whole time inc bathroom and within 12 hours gone and didnt come back for the whole week.

We had a damp check done in oct and all was fine.

Does it go away after a day or so when the van heats up propery??

Kevin
