Battery Charging

I have an Abbey GTS 215 year 2008.

Can anybody advise if the caravan battery charges direct from the car 12 volt charger when hitched up and moving.

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,

The leisure battery will charge from the towcar, when the towcar engine is running. This is done through the towcar alternator, but will depend on how the towbar harness is configured.

The leisure battery will be charged through the onboard 230V charger when on mains hook-up.

I hope that helps.

It's the standard 13 pin connection so I assume that OK for the Leisure battery to charge from the car (while the engine is running). You say it's dependant on how the towbar harness is configured, is there an alternative (or just incorrectly connected?)

Hi Brian,

Yes, a 13 pin towbar harness will charge the leisure battery, but there are incorrect ways to wire a 13 pin connector for use with a caravan.

A simple check is to remove the leisure battery clamps, and with the towcar engine running, measure the voltage across the leisure battery clamps. If you read a voltage, your battery is being charged during towing.
