Beds and lack of sleep.

Maybe I have a devious mind but why do all manufacturers seem to fit a not standard width bed. We own a Lunar Delta TI on a seasonal pitch and struggle for comfort on the bed. My daughter and sons family use the van and have the same complaint. I recently looked at the Buccaneer models thinking a wider van maybe they have a larger bed, but no the same as the rest. In fact I think with the new Clipper they have missed a trick by not allowing the two single beds to be joined together after moving the small chest of drawers. If there are any vans out there with a 5ft wide island bed (except Hobby as my current site does not allow) please tell me.

apart from the obvious. because it is a caravan and a 5ft wide bed would greatly restrict the walking area around it.
same as why they seem to cut off one of the btm corners, meaning if one of the sleepers is more the 5ft 6in that side is too short :S.
I always tell newbies looking for the perfect van. that caravanning is a compromise. always will be you may never find a perfect van, just one that is as near as possible.

i agree with Colin that a fixed bed that big would simply not fit. The beds tend to be sized to fit the space so are not standard sizes. If the problem is the mattress then Duvalay do make replacement ones at a cost or you could try a foam topper.
If you need the size the only way to get that width would be to use the front lounge where there are several models where the bed is that big and also longer as it is the full width of the caravan. You might still need a topper though on some but the current Baileys do seem to have the best design but again you would need to try it to see what you thought..

I must admit to having often been perplexed as to why the fixed bed layout is so popular when the fixed bed provided is simply not big enough.

We use the front lounge plus a £100 mattress topper to create a king size bed, and have no problems sleeping on it :)

Guess I did my compromising caravanning in the 70's and 80's. I think that UK manufacturers should start to think outside the box (pardon the pun) and offer something different. In the boats that I have owned beds were never a problem and you could go to any bed shop and buy a new double mattress that would fit. I still think that Buccaneer with the wider van could allow those twins to be freestanding or able to be moved whilst retaining storage underneath. Happy days !!

We find the same problem with caravan beds, we have a super king size bed at home and cannot sleep in a 4'4" bed you get in most caravans, so we have got single beds, lunar lexon 640. the beds are 2'7" wide each and its pure bliss. we sleep better in the van than the house.
Both Bailey and Swift think one of a couple must be a short ass and one tall as the beds are 1 short and one long, not a lot of good if your both fairly tall. Still their loss and we think the Lunar is FAB

The trouble with separate beds is when my wife snores I cannot reach her to get her to stop.

The single beds in our hymer are 2mts long & 80cms wide with proper sprung mattresses
Or in old money six foot six and three quarter inches long by two foot seven and a half inches wide ;)
