Bilbao to LLaFranc

We are thinking of travelling across northern Spain next year from Bilbap to LLaFranc it appears to be about 440 miles does anyone have experience of the route such as a good overnight stop off. Also, I have searched the Fotum and there is differing opinion about the crossing and the ferry company to use if at all! Any further input would be welcome as we just wanted a change from driving down but given some of the comments we might be having second thoughts.

Regards

David

Calais to LlaFranc is 780 against the 440 from Bilbao following over a days ferry travel.

My daughter and son inlaw have done Portsmouth to Spain crossing and have decided that driving is the better option for them, weather can do what it likes in the bay of Biscay when you are on a nice French autoroute or tucked up snugly in a rock steay Campnile hotel or sleeping in your van.

Trading the extra 340 miles against 29 hours on a Ferry that may be quite un comfortable is worth some more thought. Also 340 extra miles each way compared to the ferry costs there is quite a direct saving if you are not worried about added mileage to your car.
