Black Ice

None of the roads around us have been gritted for quite a while. This morning we came across a Range Rover that had skidded on black ice and went through the hedge. The road is wide enough for one vehicle and he was on a slight downhill bit when a van coming from the opposite direction appeared. There are pull in places along that stretch of the road. He braked as apparently the white van was going a bit fast and on braking the RR slid into the hedge in front of the van. The van did not bother to stop and continued on its journey. Sadly we could not help, but as it was a V8 RR I suggested he try using the low range. He had forgotten about the low range. Anyway when we returned about an hour later he was gone.

Unfortunately not the first time we have come across a situation where the car's ability exceeds that of the driver. Sadly on some occasions a life has been lost i.e. flooded river.

I think there's a mindset among some LR owners that they're invincible.

They have a chip on there shoulder, because they have no money in there wallet, it all goes to the LR dealers, which they are frequent customers.

Salt bins are usually yellow. This one’s green and the salt is past it’s sell by date

I use an empty chicken pellets container and take salt out of the councill bin in an adjacent road. It’s clearly marked for highways use only and I just sprinkle some around the road/turning circle as required. Don’t use it on home patio or drive etc as it is dirty and can affect the pavers/blocks. We and near neighbours are at bottom of a hill.

Our son certainly doesn't have a chip on his shoulder, he gets his new one this week. And has requested All season tyres on it this time.

What tyres did his previous one come with? Surprised a Defender doesn’t come with All Season 3PMSF BFGoodrich AT !!!! Damn the fuel costs.

I think it came with Pirreli, When he went to the south west of France last month, (where the photo was taken) he had to buy a pair of Snow socks, to just be sure legally safe. Even with road tyres the traction through deep mud was fantastic, as we found out on a 4x4 day in a quarry.

Many years ago we had Pirelli on our Volvo S80. They did not like wet weather and felt very unsure when driving in rain.

Back in "The Old Days" the tyres we bought were just Dunlop, Pirelli, Goodyear, Avon etc. And were of just one or two options of each make,

Modern tyres have so many different options on each type of tyre, different grip ratings, extra load ratings , fuel efficiency, noise, etc. The average car driver just goes in and ask for your cheapest tyre to fit their car, and then moans when it skids in the wet.
The best help, for driving in adverse conditions is to reduce speed. Tyres work very well when going forward or revers, but they are not designed to grip overly well when going sideways.

I was wrong, his Defender is shod with Pirelli, Scorpion Zero, All season. 255/60R20.

The Pirelli's in dry weather were excellent. They came standard with the car. Best tyres I have fitted were the Michelin Cross Climate. Excellent grip in all sorts fo weather including snow.

I buy 20 kg bag of dishwasher salt from local hardware shop, very cheap and clean on the driveway, gets rid of the moss and weeds as well.

We do not have a drive and where we live down a cul de sac we have never ever had a gritter in the cul de sac. Consequently many people struggle to get out of the cul de sac plus there is a slight downward slope where it joins the main road (B Road) through the village and that part is dangerous as even a 4x4 will slide.

We still got some 20kg bags of rock salt from Wickes it comes in handy for our driveway and paths .

I have recently arrived home after taking the hound for a walk. One road leading across our estate was still iced over and hadn’t melted much. I would have felt safer in a car rather than having a spaniel who can change direction quickly and spontaneously.

Also known as Gurnet, as you say a lovely slightly oily dark and white meat.

I went across the peat marshes between Highbridge and Glastonbury a couple of years ago, it was fairly much just ice, I bimbled along at about 30-35 mph a Audi sports car had been following me, we got to a fairly long stretch, bumpy but straight. They stuffed the loud pedal to the floor and went backwards, I think they must have cleaned their pants out and then just followed. My did I laugh 🤭
