Hi,

New to the forum and caravaning! I am thinking about buying our first caravan and have a BMW 525D.

We went to a local dealer and checked out a few models and like the layout with fixed bunks and rear bathroom/changing room. Something like the Swift Charisma 590 or Sprite Quattro ES. However after deciding on this type of van the dealer checked out my car's towing capability and thought it was only suitable for single axle vans? towcar.eu on the other hand states the match is good?

Has anybody used an E39 525D as a towcar? any other recommendations for vans? thanks for any help!

I think the 85% weight of your car is about 1420Kg, so there should be loads of vans that you can tow, even some twin wheelers like Lunars, which tend to be light for their size.

I think your car has a bhp of 163 which should be quite capable for towing.

The manual version of the 525d has a towload limit of 1800kg, the automatic even 2000kg. Quite a lot of owners here on the Continent tow right at that limit, so it should cope adequately with the caravans that you are considering.
