breakaway cable attatchment

i have a witter fixed towbar on my car (kia sorento)and have nowhere to attatch the breakaway cable other than round the towbar itself, i have seen the breakaway cable brackets and wonder where is best to fit it,

1) between nut and bolt that holds towbar

2) in spare holes for raising or lowering tobar

3) there is a hole at side smaller than a tow bar bolt hole, could attatch there

Option 3 sounds about right as long as the fastening is strong enough to hold the bracket in place if the caravan became detached from your towball and the cable acted to engage the caravan brakes.

I have a Witter detachable tow bar. Witter told me to use the hole to the right side of the bracket which in my case they said was made for that purpose.

I was faced with the same issue with a Witter bar on a Jeep Grand Cherokee - Got around it by using a 'D' Shackle - the breakaway cable can loop back on itself through the smooth circular part and the bolt through the hole in the bar - works well - just make sure the shackle has a high enough breaking strain (got mine of ebay but a good ironmogers should have them)

Hope this helps

Jon

I use a small D-shackle with my Witter detacheable, cost 60 pence from towsure.

The D shackle bolt fits through the hole in the tow bracket.

Pass breakaway cable clip through D-shackle and clip back onto itself - this is the method required by Alko.

Do not use the clip on the breakaway cable to attach directly to a hole in the tow bracket.

Charlie, I too use a D shackle bolt in the small hole. Whatever you do don't connect your cable to the hole by it's clip. With the bolt you can loop the cable through the eye and back on itself.

A little confused. I was told to clip the caribena directly through the hole of the towbar bracket. Alko sell such a cable on their web-site and specifically say it for clipping directly in those cases where the towbar manufacturer recommend against looping round the towbar - ie most detachable towbars.

I too am confused.. I do the same as S and can't see the problem? Can someone explain why it's necessary to use a d shackle?

I have an X5 with a detachable towball. There doesn't seem to be anany place to attach breakaway cable except just round vthe towbar and then clip back on itself..... any ideas please??

I have a detachable bar on the Sasb and clip the breakaway cable around the towbar. When the cable is not in use I clip it to the top part of the jockey wheel handle

isn't the whole point, that if the towbar becomes detached, there is still a connected pull from the car to engage the caravan break?

I'd really appreciate some help 🙁
