built in battery charger wattage

hi to all,

without having a look does anybody know how many watts a built in battery charger uses , if it makes a difference its an elldiss thanks glen

Hi Glen. The "output rating", usually given in AMPS not WATTS, varies from manufacturer. Most 'vans are fitted with chargers rated in the range 6 to 10 Amps (80 to 140 Watts approx)This meams that to fully charge a battery from "flat", your typical 85A/Hr battery, will take around 10 to 15 hours, assuming the battery is in good condition.

Hope this helps.

One other thought. Be aware that 'van chargers will normally only charge your battery to around 80% capacity, as their voltage is normally limited to around 13.8 volts. To fully charge a battery, the start charge voltage neads to be around 14.5 volts. This higher voltage is what you would normally get from a standard car type charger, or better still a "smart charger", where the higher voltage automatically drops as the charging progresses.

Cheers.

Ray is correct. A number of the latest 'vans do have fairly high Amps rating charger outputs. The only thing to note though, is that when on electric hook-up, the higher the rate, the less time it takes to charge the battery. Most however will still only charge to around 80%, due to voltage limit as mentioned previously.

I think the question was regarding the input wattage not output? given the above then, 276w/230v = a little over 1amp
