I managed to exchange a normal Calor 6kg propane cylinder yesterday for a Lite version, at no cost, from the local dealer. However I was informed that a 6kg refill for a Lite cylinder was £3 more than a standard 6kg refill !! When enquiring why I was informed that the refill for the Lite cylinder had additives to stop the gas reacting with the metal of the Lite cylinder. Has anyone else come across this?

Yes all these years down the line, still paying the extra but I wouldn't go back to the old ones, having only just had the guts wired back in this year after 7 years dangling I don't want to risk the other side popping out!

hi folks, yes WC calor still charge £3 more for the lite cyliders, last one cost me £22.50 while the standard red one was £18.50 so your right, as an aside the cheapest gas is the 15kg ones at £33 but who wants to carry one of those around,
the lite ones are for me well worth the bit extra and you get a gauge on it so should never run out on site.

I lug a 13kg standard Calor propane (which I can buy for £25.50) all the way to Malaga/Spain and back every year in February/March
This is an eight day journey and for those eight nights the caravan is usually running on gas.
Even stopping during the day for a driving break or meal in the caravan means the gas heating has to go on straight away ..... it is often near or below zero outside.
Some gas is used for the 30 days when on site and 75% of a full cylinder is used by the time we get back home.
The cylinder is secured centrally in the front locker and the total weight of the caravan is within its 1150kgs Mtplm and the nose weight is within limits.
I do also only use a 6kgs standard Calor propane for shorter trips.

The van I have just purchased came with a 5kg BP Gas Light total weight full 8.7kg does anyone know how much these are to fill up, a good point with this bottle is you can see how much gas is in the bottle as the fibreglass sides are transparent enough.
You need to check the price of your gas locally. I just bought a Calor Patio Gas from my local garden center (Calor dealer) only to find that the price listed on Calor's site was cheaper. I could have had it delivered to home for the price I paid. Checked with a local garage selling Calor; a different price again.
Anyway I stopped using Calor Lite after my 6 month old Truma regulator failed with the dreaded yellow oil problem. I now use BP Light as my dealer said they have never had a regulator problem with any vans using this gas. Probably the same gas but at the moment it is working for me. Not quite as available as Calor but a 10kg lasts me the whole season.

I exchanged one of my smaller propane cylinders for the Calor ite when they were first introduced but a few weeks later when I went in to exchange the second smaller cylinder Calor had changed the rules and you had to buy the new Calorlite cylinder and got virtually nothing back on the old cylinder. So since then I have one small and one 6kg Calorlite, but I would like to get the second one changed to Calorlite as for the same 20kg combined weight I have more gas which would then give a bit more margin us for our trips abroad.
Have Calor now relaxed the exchange terms to allow smaller cylinders to be exchanged for the Calorlite, or is it just a local dealer initiative?

You can swap an existing 7kg butane or 6kg propane Calor cylinder for a Calor Lite, according to the Calor web site. see https://secure.calor.co.uk/OrderCalorCylinders/SuitableCylinderExchange.asp If this link does not work go to the Calor website and click link to propane cylinders and when on that page click the link beside the "number of cylinders to return" and the page showing the possible swaps comes up.

We really are being charged over the odds here. A Spanish 12.5kg CEPSA butane cost 13.5 euros for a refill earlier this year - that just about half the price for double the quantity of Calor lite (and of course butane is no problem where it's warm).
