camp sites en route to manga del mar menor, spain

we are planning to depart middle of october this year taking some time to travel through france down to spain for the winter and then travelling back. can anyone suggest/advise on any nice sites on the way down which will make our journey more leisurley and interesting, but not too far off the beaten track or route. as we are taking our golden retriever dog with us we are going to cross on the tunnel to calais, hopefully to get the 9 am train and will probably travel about 150 miles on the first leg. any other useful tips gratefully accepted, I've got all the books maps etc but first hand info is alwyas appreciated. I will be making my arrangements with the cc probably.

I would recommend that you get a copy of Caravan Europe 1 from the Caravan Club that way you will be able to see and plan your route through France and Spain using the sites that will be open especially as you will be travelling "out of season".

The main problem you will have travelling through France is that many sites close at the end of September.This is our 2nd year at La Manga, and the first year we travelled down in November and didn't have too much choixce of where to stay.

Last year we left in August and took two months to get down here, and that was ideal as lots of choice and found some really nice places.

Have you decided on a route yet, as we have come down several ways. We tend to use Camping Cheques on the way down as they offer good value. ACSI Card is also useful.

If you're staying three months or longer you are better booking direct with the site than with either of the clubs or Camping Cheques. However, most of the best pitches for next winter have already been booked.

Let me know if I can help as we're down here until May/June.

thanks nicholas, I have booked the chunnel crossing, overnight a nearby cc club site and planned the route basically in accordance with the michelin and aa autoroutes. I have got the book you refer to so will probably take it from there. thanks for the tip about booking the long term sites direct. this will be my next bit of research - i hope i won't be too late to get somewhere to stay!
