camp sites in the french alps

we are thinking of going to the french alps august 2008 can any one tell me any good sites that are by a lake and mountains that are not to big and what would the weather be like thanks

Nigel,

The Annecy area was reccomended to us but research suggested it was rather crowded so we decided on Lac d'Aiguebelette S.W. of Chambery. Camping Le Curtelet features well in the guide books, is lake side and looks O.K. in the satellite photos ( Google maps ) so we have booked. They have a web site for downloading booking forms and info. www.camping-le-curtelet.com and reply promptly to e-mails. The local tourism office www.chambery-tourisme.com offers more local info.

Having said all that I am only going by what I can glean from guide books and the internet so I am hoping we have chosen well.

We stayed a few years ago at 'Le Coin Tranquille' at Les Abrets. This was a very pleasant site, a little away from the crowds around Annecy, but still within easy reach of that area. Pitches were of a good size and flat, the pool etc was well kept, there were flowers and shrubs everywhere and the bar and restaurant were excellent. As for the weather - well, we were there in 2003, the year of 'le canicule', or the big heatwave. It was very hot, even at night, and we several times watched planes scooping up water from one of the lakes to drop on forest areas where there were fires.

The web-site is www.coin-tranquille.com

Most mountains tend to be on the large size!

Weather variable.

we wnt to Annecy, hated it, stopped for one night only after being attacked by very very large insects at dusk. Hated the whole set up on the lake. moved off to a municipal site in the shadow of mont blanc, small lake, little bar
eastaurant. its close to where the little train leaves to go up mont blanc, an experience not to be missed as it terminates on the glacier itself. bloody cold but a fantastic view. cant rememvber the name own of site but will answer later when we have looked it up inold logs

the municipal site i mentioned is in Passy, just south east of Sallanches on the N205. The train up mont Blanc goes from Le favet which is the next town along the 205.

Went to La Raviore in Doussard on Southern side of Lake Annecy last August. Great site and great area with so much to do. Agree with comments re Annecy being busy however Southern side of lake is much quieter.

Temperature 24-28 degrees throughout stay however did sometimes get chilly in evening.

Temp does drop as you go into the higher Alps eg when we visited Mnt Blanc via cable car, 24 degrees at base but minus 5 degree at at top!.

Certainly an area we will be visiting again.
