Camping Cheques are the paper vouchers (or now available electronically to Gold Card holders) issued by what is a consortium of campsite owners, who have joined together to encourage people to use their sites outside of peak times, by offering a really good discount. Basically you buy as many cheques as you think you'll need at a cost of 14 euros (or

One more question.

How do sites quality "peak times", are they during school holidays?

Sorry just thought of another

Is it possible to get a site list before buying the cheques?

Thanks

We've used them at Newlands at Charmouth, which we thought was very nice, at Rivendale in Derbyshire which is our nearest Camping Cheque site, and so we often 'use up' any CCs there. We've also stayed at Brighouse Bay in Scotland, and the Quiet Site in Ullswater - just wish there were a few more British sites.

The only thing I would add, to my original posting, is that it is possible to 'cross seasons'. This would be where some of your days on site are outside the Camping Cheque acceptance dates - and it's possible to pay the normal rate for some days, and then Camping Cheques for the rest. We've done this, too.

Posted it to soon - hope you can understand the list (I did it for my son and his girlfriend, who is a teacher, as they can only go during the School holidays. Each site specifies its own dates - the French peak season is much shorter than ours in Britain, from mid-July usually, to mid-August(ish) - and the sites on this list all take Camping Cheques during what would be our school holidays in England.

Hi Dodger

I recently phoned Camping Cheques to say I was interested in France but that I needed to see where the sites were located. I asked if the Sites book cost [

If you decide to use Camping Cheques (I do) may I also commend you obtain an "ACSI" card which will provide the similar value camping

except that you do not pay ahead of you trip, I find that having the two gives me the ideal options.

I would commend you look them up via the web.

And of course in France one should not ignore the municipal camp sites, which also provide excellent value and interest

Hi All

Today I booked a Portsmouth - Caen ferry & 14 cheques through Camping Cheques direct on the phone. The total cost was far less than anyone else could offer & 3 cheques were free, they have an offer on until 31/01.

Tankie - we have done the same for late August - same crossing - Camping Cheques offered best price for ferry. Site is in Les Castels brochure but neither Caravan Club or Camping & Caravanning. We'll deal with them direct even if we have to wait until next year to use our 3 camping cheques.

You can always use your spare Camping Cheques in England. We've done Rivendale (Derbyshire), Quiet Site (Lake District), Newlands (Dorset) and Brighouse Bay (Scotland) and have loved each site for different reasons.

Hi Val

There's no problem using up surplus camping cheques now - they will extend them for a further two years (at least for Gold Card - not sure about paper ones). I think of them the same way as Euros - any left over ones I save until the next trip and it comes as a pleasant surprise to find them next time!!

...but it should be possible to keep the surplus to a minimum. If you order less than you need you can buy a top up near the end of the trip. Last year a kind camp site lady phoned Camping Cheques in France and got another five credited to my Gold Card for me. So they are getting more flexible all the time.

Happy holidays

Keith

Tankie -

When we pulled off the ferry last August, people were trying to find a space to pull up on the side of the road. I don't know of any other area. However, not too far away (approx 15 to 20 mins) is Chateau Martragny. You can let them know by email that you are going and just pull up on the large grassed pitches on one side of the driveway. We did this last year - it was dark but you can see where you are going with your headlights and just drive onto a pitch. You will not need to unhitch - just get your torch to put your legs down and you're set. Water & electric are at the rear of the pitches so it would be worthwhile having a walk on the pitches before you pull on to make sure you are close enough.

many thanks for that Lesley, that will proberbly be the best thing to do as there will be two of us (outfits) travelling together. Did you use Camping cheques, if so did they hace an offer on as many do ie- stay 7 nights, for only 6 cheques, type of thing?? I believe some do.
