I am ready for my trip to France this week - staying at Le Puits de L'Auture near Royan. If anyone has any info regarding this campsite - particularly best pitches, are they serviced pitches, reverse polarity or any other items which would make our stay easier.

Also if anyone has any points of interest or ideas for the Royan area - things to see/do. I have heard that there is a good market at Saumur on the first Monday of each month.

Many thanks for any information you knowledgeable people post.

Hi Mike

Can't help with site but here are a few thing to do in the area.

Palmyre Zoo. This will be the best Zoo you will have seen but sometimes very busy as it is popular.

Cave houses at Meschers-s-Gironde. Houses built into the cliffs of the Gironde, a museum you can explore.

Chateau De Didonne at Semussac. A well known Pinneau producer with well stocked shop, agricultural museum and gardens.

Saintes. Large town on the river Charrente with lots of Roman

buildings with well preserved amphitheatre.

Ile D'Oleron. Toll free bridge. good beaches. Westside for wave bobbing and surf. North eastside for sand and swim.

Cognac. Free trips around cognac houses and nice town on river Charente.

Saumur is too far (even for a good market) I guess you meant

somwhere else!!

Have fun

Mike,

We just returned from France on Saturday and spent 12 nights at Le Puits de L'Auture in late June / early July. We really enjoyed our stay and would certainly return.

They appeared to have a mixture of electric and non electric pitches. We had booked witn Select Sites and had chosen a serviced pitch with water and drainage. The pitch we were on had reversed polarity so the ready made adaptor was brought out. The hook up connections are the French two prong connector. Strange way they operate regarding their hook ups - you are escorted to your pitch then the person returns after 5 minutes or so to unlock the electric hook up box, plug your connection in then locks the box again. You need to get them to come back and unlock it so you can disconnect when you want to leave. Don't know how that works with motor homes that are always on the move!

The site is accessed directly of the coast road. When driving off from reception onto the site you will be taken through a security barrier. It is a right hand turn and although there is plenty of room you do need to make a fairly wide turning circle. We saw one or two being caught out by this when we were there and they had to do a bit of reversing. Exit is alao by security barrier.

I didn't notice any area of the site particularly better than an other. All pitches seemed flat, most separated or partially separated from the next by hedges. There are a number of mature trees about giving some shade.

The toilet and shower blocks nearest to reception appeared to be the most modern. The ones in the middle of the site were a little dated and past their best with cracked tiles but were still cleaned several times a day.

While we were there the site was fairly quiet with a lot of empty pitches.

The shop was not very well stocked, perhaps waiting on the site becoming busier. Bread etc was available but you had to be there early before it was all sold, didn't find this a problem as two minutes walk from the site entrance (turn right as you go out the gate)there was a small shop which sold freshly made bread all day.

Takeaway food on the site but apart from a portion of Frites once never used it. Restaurants outside the site, both left and right, within easy walking distance.

There is a daily market in St Palais sur Mer which is only a 5 minute drive away or approx.40 minutes walk by a coastal path. Well worth taking the walk at least once for the views and rock formation at Le Pont de Diable.

As someone else said the zoo at Palmyre is worth a day out.

Anything specific, please ask.

Robert
