Has anybody found the solution to campsite water tasting like TCP.

We have tried everything possible. It seems to change at will, especially if left open at night.

Is it the caravan interior that taints the water. We have even taken the water home and tried it with no problems. Its a complete mystery.

Edd Lorkins. Benfleet. Essex.

P.S. I have voted on the BBC Jeremy Vine show.

Well done for voting Ed

With regard to the water, do you have a filter under your kitchen sink? - I notice the difference sometimes as we have and some other people's vans don't.

I can taste the difference!

Hi lol

We dont drink the water from the taps we use a seperate water carrier.

The same water is sometimes tainted and sometimes not. I just cant make it out.

We have never noticed the water tasting funny, just in some areas it is a bit cloudy but this is just down to geology.

I clean the whole system including aqua rolls with a sterilising fluid before every trip even though we use the van nearly every 3 weeks, i don't buy the specialist caravan stuff i use milton or a supermarkets own brand they are just as good.

On top of this our van is fitted with a filter to remove any impurities.

Edward we also use a seperate container for drinking water but we only use it after boiling it for tea etc. If it's for drinking why not buy a Brita filter jug like I have at home. I keep it in the fridge where it stays nice and cold.

Hi Ice.

We also sterilise with Milton without any difference.

Perhaps I should make the whisky a little stronger.

Hi Lord B.

We can still taste it in the tea, but not all the time. As I said before we bought the water home but it was OK.

Our van is quite new so I wonder if its the interior [plastic] thats affecting the water, its a long shot but what else could it be?

Never have this problem, and been all over the country.

I just wonder what you are drinking out of - plastic, melamine, perspex etc. or are you using proper china and glass?

Hello Edward,

In the majority of cases the TCP taste is actually one of the chemicals used in the manufacture of the flexible hoses typically fitted in caravans.

The chemical should be 'locked' in the pipe walls, but if it is not properly cured, the chemical can leech out into the water passing through the pipe. Sometimes the roll-along water containers have been known to produce a similar taste in water.

If you have the taste then it can be argued that the pipes are faulty.

There is no cure for the pipes other than replacement. You can avoid the problem if you use a separate water container for drinking water.

Several contributors have successfully complained to their caravan supplier and had the pipes changed under warranty.

Our van is only 3yrs old so the pipes should be OK.

But anyway as I have said before we dont drink from the taps, we use a proper water container that we fill from the standpipe on site. We have taken the water home and its OK. Also we drink from china or glass. Its all very strange.

I cant believe that some other people dont have the same problem as sometimes the water is undrinkable.

There must be a common cause somewhere?

It's a strange one Edward. As I said before we use a dedicated water container and the only time I use it is after it's been boiled for coffee. I've just asked Her Ladyship, who has a drink of water when we go to bed and she hasn't found any funny taste to it. The dogs drink it also with no complaint hehheh!

The reason I don't drink it from the tap is the black mould that grows and is known to cause different illness's. Even so I still use Milton to clean the AquaRoll and piping by running it through. However this doesn't get rid of the mould that grows under the plastic sleeve thats protecting the cable/pipe thats submerged in the AquaRoll.

Hello again Eddie,

In considering your latest comment, I do not understand your thinking behind; 'Our van is only 3yrs old so the pipes should be OK'.

If you have a taste of TCP, then the source is almost 95% certain to be the pipes in the caravan or possibly your plastic water carrier.

Even though you do not use the water from the taps for drinking, you probably use tap water for washing up. The taste may be left on your cups and mugs as they dry. This might be enough to taint your drinks when you next use the cup.

Hi John. Fair comment, but why is it not all the time?

Its not the water carrier or the kettle as we have tried both at home. But I will try washing a glass out at the site standpipe so it will be independent from the van, this I have not tried as yet.

Also I will place a glass of water in the van overnight at home and see what happens.

Many thanks, two heads are better than one.

Hi John. Did what you said last night at home, Filled a cup from the van {thats been washed from the van taps] left it all night in the van. No TCP taste in the morning.

It must be the water somehow.

Its all very spookyyyyyyyyyyyy

I'm not giving up.
