Hi, we have just bought our first caravan and we are plnning in going away during april and was wondering how far we should venture to find a site suitable for young kids. (age 1 and 4)

We are able to go for 7 days and we live in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

I wodul ideally like a aite with a kids swimming pool on site (if sites do this?)

Can anyone recommend a site for beginners please.

Many thanks

Hi Colin.

While the site is small and basic, Linwater caravan park at East Calder, Edinburgh, is absolutely ideal.

There is no swimming pool on site but with the attractions of Edinburgh 15 mins away, it is well placed.

The site has a scandanavian log cabin style toilet and shower block which was immaculate while we were there.

All the pitches are level as near as poss and have plenty of room.

Jean the owner is very helpfull and will do her best to ensure you have a great time.

We tour'd there from Herefordshire as a group of 4 caravans, and Jean not only allocated us a paddock of our own, she put us right next to the disabled facilities as one of our group was disabled. e asked about bus tours in Edinburgh and not content with just giving us a leaflet, she actually rang the bus company to see what services they had and if they could handle wheelchairs etc.

Even now 3 years later she sends us a christmas card.

It is a site to be proud of and as I've said, Jean is there for support and advice.

Hi folks,

Our first trip when we were beginners was to Craigie Gardens Club site but maybe that's too near home for you.

Brighouse Bay in Dumfries & Galloway is an excellent family site

The Ranch at Maybole also has good facilities for families.

The Caravan Club at Drummore ( New England Bay ) doesn't have a pool, but is right on the edge of a very safe beach for kiddies.

Also from that site you can visit Port Logan. It is so quiet but lovely for a family on the beach with a picnic.

Hope all goes well for you......don't forget if you're stuck....always ask for help. Most people are only too happy to assist.

Hi Maureen

We too live in North Ayrshire (Irvine) and can certainly vouch for the Ranch in Maybole too. We had overlooked it many times as it was so close to home but went when we got a newer van and wanted to find out how to put the awning up etc. It still felt as if we were on holiday elsewhere and it had a small indoor pool for the kids into the bargain! It's a cc site but takes non members too. Another good site is Lomond Woods at Balloch only a games room/tv room on site but has great toilets with half baths for the kiddies and within walking distance to Lomond Shores and Balloch. Good Luck! Ashley

Hi Colin,

Welcome to a great hobby (caravanning).

Please remember wherever you go with your caravan, don't be afraid to ask any caravanner for help if you get in a fix setting up or any problems ,there's always someone on site who knows how to fix whatever. We have all had to learn these things and no-one will take the micky, enjoy. All the very best to you and your young family you'll all love it.Jim

Ps.We do get one or two comedians like Benny!on this forum.

Hi Colin

I would also recommend The Ranch at Maybole.

We live in Renfrewshire and the "outlaws" live in Ayr but like a previous poster we recently bought a new caravan and wanted to go away for the weekend to try it out. We didn't want to go too far and thought that if we went to The Ranch the "outlaws" could come and see the new van.

We were very impressed with the site and the owners are very friendly and obliging. As previously stated it even has a swimming pool.

If you don't want to go far (and for your first outing its probably preferable) then I would thoroughly recommend The Ranch.

Let us know what you decide and how you get on.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers

Richard
