car insurance when towing

Most Insurance policys cover for towing a trailer which includes a caravan so there should not be a necesscity to inform them just look at your policy. The cover is only third party so would only pay out for any damage caused by the caravan to another vehicle You need to insure the caraven sperately in order to cover it for repairs or theft

cheers John

..... and third party insurance for the van when it is not hitched up to the car, as this will not be covered by the car's insurance.

Hello Paul,

Without sight of your insurance policies, no one on the site can give you a copper bottomed answer. The only way is to check the wording of your policies, and if it is not clear from the policy documents, then ask your insurance companies.

Agree with the comments. If you fit a towbar you must inform the insurers. If they state all is fine, then no probs, but make sure you have it confirmed some where. I am with Saga and they want kn ow. That is all.

I would check if the fitting of a tow bar counts as a "modification" as that would be a way out for some insurance companies in the case ot a claim

I TOLD MY INSURER (CHURCHILL) THAT I HAD A TOWBAR FITTED 3 WEEKS AGO AND THEY ADDED IT TO MY POLICY AND SENT ME A LETTER OF CONFIRMATION ALL FOR FREE. SOME INSURERS CHARGE YOU FOR ADDING IT AS AN ADMIN CHARGE
