Over a very long time the "standard" CC pitch has grown gradually from 9m to 12m - but why?
It was always possible for foreign tourists to bring their 2.55m wide caravans, and indeed any Brits that owned similar caravans - but ordinary UK caravans, the vast majority on CC sites, have only grown by about 0.1m in width.
The standard awning depth has always been 2.5m - with some deeper, some shallower.
Cars are wider, but no more than 0.3m.
So total width of the outfit has increased by 0.4m while pitches have increased by 3.0m - the CC has been operating the 6m rule for some years, unlike some commercials, but all of a sudden there's a panic on with pitch layouts being altered, booked holidays cancelled and wardens out with tape measures.
Me being me, I don't want to be regimented - sometimes we like to go nose-in, sometimes nose-out, sometimes side-on, depending on the view - pitches used to be big enough to permit that without encroaching on the 6m rule.
No doubt the CC will used the reduced pitch numbers at each site to justify yet another inflation-busting increase in site charges. I've rarely used CC club sites in the last 5 years, clearly this "change" will ensure I don't ever use them again.
Anyway, shouldn't spacing rules be applied first at campsites - often with no defined pitches, highly inflammable tents pitch a few cm apart at peak times and then light BBQs or campfires - they really are a disaster waiting to happen.
