Caravan clubs

When I started caravanning several years ago I was in exactly the same position.

I thought the Caravan Club would be full of people who had the latest and the best caravans and towcars and that the Camping & Caravan Club would be full of 'ordinary people' like me.

So, we joined both, as we couldn't decide which group we would fit into best.

How pleased I am that we did. I soon found out that of course there are those who have extremely expensive vans and cars in the Caravan Club, but there are even more who are happy with their older vans and cars. It was exactly the same for the Camping & Caravan Club.

We decided to stay members of both for one year and then decide which one was best for us.

Several years on and we are still members of both. We regularly travel to and use sites from both clubs, and are yet to find one that we haven't been impressed with.

So really it is personal choice. If you can afford it, join both for a year and try them out, then you may be in a better position next year to choose (or stay members of both!).

They are both well worth the membership fee.

Hope this helps

Phil

They're much of a muchness - anecdotally C&CC members are more friendly but their site wardens more draconian.

I don't think CC is a club for members, it's a major operator of sites and financial services with a monthly magazine full of promotional material. I'm not a member of C&CC but it doesn't seem any different.

The biggest difference is that CC is about twice the size in members, club sites and CL/CS sites.

On club sites - C&CC will allocate your pitch - CC will allow free choice (but some may be reserved for large outfits).

Joining both does give a bigger choice but the gaps in their site networks (Club and CL/CS) are in similar areas so the extra choice is of marginal benefit.

CC services we have found all to be very good, and the travel service for booking ferries has been great and the staf have gone out of there way to help get best prices and suitable crossings. I don't often use CC sites but find them very good and I find the monthly magazine a bonus.

C&CC in my past experience had to many "anoraks" and site wardens needed to lighten up.

We have stayed at a couple of CC&C sites as guests of friends and I can only echo the opinion of the wardens.

"Draconian anoraks" just about sums up our experience.

We have always found the CC very efficient and friendly. Their CL network is far larger, there always seems to be one close to wherever you want to go.

We are members of both mainly because it gives us a better choice of sites and in our area of scotland CC have more sites be it some are AS sites. I have found both clubs tend to keep their sites in better order than non club sites. I would try both for a year and see wich one you like the best and stick with that one.

We are members of both clubs. The wife favours c&cc because she feels they're less stuffy and are more family orientated. I favour the cc because I personally feel they have got the edge on toilet facilities i.e. a bit more modern. We did try our first cl a couple of months ago and to put it bluntly it was a s*** hole and has put us off of cl's for life! We have found the wardens on both sites to be helpful and friendly. On the whole I don't really care what we use as long as we go away!

Phil - CLs vary considerably, as do their prices - some are better than ANY club site. The price (in relation to other CLs in the same area) gives a reasonable indication of standards and facilities will be listed. Some CLs have a website, well worth checking out.

We used to be in both, both had good modern clean sites and we had good stays at both sites. With CCC you do get a wider mixture of campers on sites, with tents etc which gives a different feel to the site.

We left CCC due to poor experience with wardens at Chertsey, poor support from Euro Assistance when we broke down in France, and our main concern which was their apparent lack of support for 4x4 users, which we are. But as the other posts have said why not join both and see how you get on.

Hi all WE belong to both clubs and have done for the past 4-5 years, used to belong to CC only years ago then felt we werent getting any more benefits than non members, but things have changed a bit now. Anyway in deffence of the wardens of the C&CC We recently travelled from Essex to C&CC sit Luss on the bank of Loch Lomond, We traveled over night and got to Luss at about 7 in the morning and stopped in a laybye to wait till 12 o clock now I can nod off but my partner Jackie couldn`t so she phoned the site told them where we were and could we come in and pay extra for the day,the warden told us to come up as it were a Monday morning some units were on the way out and we could come in at no charge and offered us the choice of pitch. They were most polite and helpful during our 8 nights there.

Have been with CCC for many years now and have been very satisfied. Have always found Site staff courteous and helpful. Have had one or two slightly negative experiences over the years but from time to time there will be times when other things happening may temporarily dent the enthusiasm of a member of the site staff. The ability to offer a choice of pitch can vary from site to site but I have been offered a choice of pitches on many occasions.

When I have been travelling abroad I have experienced excellent service from their Carefree service and have found the special RAC Recovery scheme invaluable.

to be fair to the wardens rick most are ok,but i have noticed in the last few years the ccc seems to be getting more regimented wether this is down to the club or not i don't know, the 12'oclock ruling has long been an issue, assuming your pitch is vacant i don't see a problem with getting booked in,you made the point yourself about parking up waiting for 12 to come round.i have contacted the ccc on 2 occasions about this issue so far i have not had a satisfactory reply.

When we bought our caravan last year we just joined the Caravan Club. We thought we might insure with them but in the end we didn't. When we came to look for a site for our Easter break, all the CC sites in the area we wanted to visit were full so we looked at the Camping & Caravanning Club Sites. We found one that was available so joined that club too as we more than saved our membership fee just on our 6 night easter break. C&CC also give you camping miles stamps whenever you stay on one of their sites. As Easter was Peak season and they give you more stamps then, we actually got enough stamps for 2 free nights away low season - an unexpected bonus!

We like to break up the journey when we holiday more than about 3 hours away as it's better with the kids and being members of both clubs obviously doubles our choice of CLs & CSs. We've also found that more C&CC CSs tend to have toilet facilities and sometimes even showers. These are sometimes just portakabin types but clean and useable nonetheless. Suppose it's because they take tent campers too. They can cost a little bit more than CLs but only usually a couple of pounds extra.

In our experience of the proper club sites, the comments already posted about more superior facilities at Caravan Club sites is correct. The C&CC facilities are clean and well maintained but are often not heated - tent campers must be a hardier bunch than us caravan softies!

We will continue to be members of both clubs for the foreseeable future as they both have their merits and while ever we continue to benefit from both, the membership fees will be worthwhile. We like both magazines and the C&CC Big Sites Book is very useful.

Think that we'll use the Caravan Club sites for 'proper' holidays and Camping & Caravanning Club CS's for shorter breaks.

For those who book foreign holidays with the clubs it should be noted that the Caravan Club pre-purchase so even if there is a significant drop in rates they do not up their price or add surcharges whereas the Camping and Caravan Club do.
