I have just purchased tickets for the last night of the proms in Hyde Park on 8th September and want to make a few days holiday of it, by taking my caravan. We live in Scotland so will be driving down the M1 or A1 area. I have seen the 2 sites in London itself that belong to the Caravan & Camping club but they both seem to be on the South and I don't fancy driving through the city area. I also don't want to pay congestion charges so would prefer somewhere close to the train/underground system, can anyone recommend a good site that I could contact? Thanks.

Caravan Club site at Denham, bucks should be good. It's on the west side of London and handy from M1 and M45. Railway station within a mile into Marylebone. or go in to West Ruislip for the tube. Not sure about how late trains run to get you back though.

If Denham full. there is a CC CL in Chalfont St Giles and a commercial site in the same village. Trains from Seer Green into London. Easy access from A 40 or A413.

Enjoy the concert.

If you are a member of the Caravan club you could try Commons wood at Welwyn garden city just of the A1. Alternatively try the following

Lee Valley Campsite, Sewardstone Road, Chingford, London E4 7RA

Tel: 020 8529 5689

Fax: 020 8559 4070

e-mail: scs@leevalleypark.org.uk

it is 5 minutes drive from Chingford Station (there is also a bus service). Access is very easy. Either take the A1 then M25 clockwise to Jnc 26 or from A1 take A14 M11 then M25 for 1 junction (anti clockwise to jnc 26) then follow the signs. very quiet site which is right on the London border.

Hi Dawn,

So you're going to "Proms in the Park", and I hope you have a great time.

Hyde park (and the Royal Albert Hall) are outside the congestion charge zone - which only applies on Monday to Friday (working week) - so no undue worries if you want to take your car (other than the cost of parking)

Both Hyde Park (and the Albert Hall) are quite near Paddington and Marylebone main line stations - which serve the West of London.

Ray mentioned some CC sites to the West of London in Buckinghamshire - Seer Green and Chalfont St.Giles - living in Buckinghamshire I know that area pretty well and used to buy eggs from the chicken farm that is now the commercial site in Seer Green (no chickens any more though). These sites have easy access from the M40 and M25. Train from Beaconsfield or Denham will take you into Marylebone - Seer Green train station is a "halt" and only open during the rush hour.

Welwyn Garden and Hertford are to the North of London (and certainly aren't 20 minutes to London) - train will take you into King Cross or Liverpool Street and you'll need a tube journey around central London to the West.

Chigwell is further round to the East.

The two Caravan Club sites in South London are good, inside the M25 and so have access to underground and local transport services, with reasonable access from the M25 - but I'd pick somewhere to the West.

We have stayed on the camping and caravan clubs site Theobalds park, it is just off the M25 4 junctions from the M1 and it was great. I was doing a race in Hyde Park and we got the train from Waltham cross, which was 10mins away and travelled into London. There was a large Cheap car park at the station but a bit dodgy later at night, but not too far for a taxi maybe?

The site is lovely and really freindly.

Have a good weekend.

Robert, interested in your comments - I used to live in Chalfont st Giles and Seer green and see things have changed a bit. Thanks particularly for mentioning Seer Green station, as i am planning a short visit which may well have included using that station after rush hour. Ray S
