We are thinking of visiting Rome next June and wonder if anyone has used the camping site 'I Pini'. It reads very nice in the caravan guides but would like a personal opinion. If not this site, can you recommend any others within easy commuting distance of Rome?

Not stayed there, but its part of the same group as our favourite site in tuscany [norcinni figline]

So have no reason to doubt it wouldn't be of the same high standard..

Hi Lawrence

We visited Rome for the first time this Summer (2006). We stayed at Camping Roma Flash. It was a good site with good rail access into central Rome only a short bus ride from the site gates. We went into the centre twice. Roma Flash was a pleasant place to relax after the heat of Rome as it is on the shores of Lake Bracciano which gives a cooling breeze. You can read my review at http://www.practicalcaravan.com/newforums/fm_messages.asp?FO=7&FM=358351

I would recommend Roma Flash for visiting Rome.

Regard

Tim

Hi Lawrence

Obviously your choice but have you considered that going to a site nearer to Rome involves driving nearer to the the Centre of Rome. The Rome Circular, which we used to get to Roma Sporting Flash, was quite near enough for me. In fact on the way back homewards we missed the turn for the circular and had to drive on towards the centre - NOT a pleasant experience. I found Italian drivers to be often reckless and impatient, hand on horn, especially if impeded by foreigners towing caravans. Rome drivers were particularly strong on these trends!!!

It took us about 10 mins on the bus to the rail station at Bracciano, half price fare for campers who bought bus tickets in advance at the site, and then only about 45 mins into central Rome by very comfy double-decker train.

Roma Sporting Flash markets itself as being for folk wanting to visit Rome and gives each guest a booklet with suggested itineraries, rail stations and a bus and train timetable.

We were, also, warned by the campsite that there were a LOT of problems with cars being broken into in Rome and there was a police notice up in the campsite reception confirming this. In fact the campsite management recommended not even parking in the car park at Bracciano Rail station because of break-ins. We met a Dutch guy whose Audi's door lock had been wrecked by a thief at Bracciano rail station whilst he was visiting Rome. He had big problems as Audi, and most other Italian garages, close for the whole of August for holidays.

If I went again I think Roma SF would be near enough for me!!

Best wishes

Tim

Hi there Lawrence

We stayed at Ipini this summer. It is part of the same group as Norcenni Girasole.........but Ipini is nothing at all like it. As with Norcenni there is a daily bus into Rome which is very useful but the trips are very limited. The pool is small and not deep but the restaurant is fine and we enjoyed our meals there. Ipini is small and only one toilet block, but it is clean. The site is not really a long stay holiday park but it is ideal for seeing the city. Hope this helps. Happy travels BarryB

Thanks for this. We plan to stay for a week. We have no kids - would it be good enough for this? Is there a Norcenni site near Rome, and, if so, do you have any details?

just outside rome to the west.

and sorry the post above is incorrect. for that site you would enter from the west towards the vatican, but again much better than entering rome from either the north or the east.

Sorrento? i know the almalfi coast, but never been to sorrentto.

the roads are twisty and thin in places, and the standard of driving is rather hit and miss. advice you not use the m/way near to salerno to get on, 8 lanes to 4, although the drivers seem to think there are 16 lanes!

Thanks Tim. We thought the bus provided for the journey into Rome from the I Pini site may be quicker than from the Roma Flash. We'll give it more thought.

Hi Lawrence

A simple answer is yes. I think many teenagers would find the site a bit dull but for a week to see the sites its good and being a little out of Rome there are other places to see as well. We very much liked Lago di Bracciano. Our girls had a pedalo and we had a coffee and ice cream and it was a nice change from the busy city. I do think there is another Norcenni sister site in Rome and It may be called Camping Village Roma but I dop not know anything about it. There is also Camping Village Fabulous but this is out on the coast and again I do not know it. You could visit the website...www.ecvacanze.it and have a look. Happy Travels BarryB
