Towing with friends from Caen to Sarlat in June on a Tuesday. Looking for interesting site for overnight stop. We will use toll free routes finally using A20 to Brive. We embark at 0730 so have the day to pootle along though conscious of finding suitable comfort stops!! Any advice on negotiating Tours will be appreciated. Many Thanks

Hi, not sure which route you are taking to Brieve or how far you want to go in a day. A few ideas, though.

Doue la Fontaine has a goob municipal site easily found from the bypass. The is a pool adjacent and a big supermarket no more than a mile away. Doue is the ' City of the rose' and has an extensive garden / park accordingly.

Just to north of Poitiers at St Georges is the Futuriste site again easy to find. This site is a favourite overnight for many Dutch and Brits throughout the year and is generally well run.

Just south of Brieve in Payrac there is a medium sized site Panoramique and a small CL farm site in a village about two miles north. Sorry can't remember name, but it's in the CC France book under Payrac. In nearby Souillac is a splndid museum of automatons next to the fine Roman church, also supermarket.
As for negotiating Tours, as for any city that has a motorway passing near, use the motorway for two or three junctions. You will find that many of the sections near cities are toll free or if not the fee will be low and well worth it to avoid city traffic, particularly if you are 'convoy' with another outfit.

As you probably know fuel is much cheaper at supermarkets than main roads and particularly motorways. You can often avoid narrow access at supermarkets by going to the 24/24 pumps which may be card only, but easy to use and exit from.

Much obliged for your reply. Will do some research. Trying to find a web site that helps with comfort stops/petrol stations for toll free roads!!

Again many thanks Buksang

RayS - Brive is spelt like that (not Brieve). At Poitiers it's the Futuroscope site

Buksang - We do this journey on a regular basis as we live just North of Brive. Are you looking for a proper campsite or just somewhere to park for the night, using all the facilities in the 'van? We always do the journey in one go but I appreciate that some people don't want to go as far as we do in one hit. I agree with RayS, all the major cities on the route have toll free motorways.

Doue la Fontaine seems a long way off the route. There is a nice municipal at Lussac les Chateaux but many of the French municipal sites won't be open at the beginning of June. Have a look on the ACSI site, even if you don't belong to the organisation you can get lots of ideas.

If you use the viamichelin.com website for route planning you will see a little pop up at the bottom with about 6 symbols, including a pump and a P.
Tap these and you will get the same symbols appearing on the map showing filling stations and parking places respectively.

The website is a bit Clunky at times, but worth getting to know. You can also get live traffic, holdups, roadworks etc. my only complaint is that sometimes the actual roads shown are not up to date. For example, some motorway additions are still shown as 'under 'construction' months after they have fully opened.
