Hi, Can anyone recommend a caravan site around an hour from the Eurotunnel Terminal? We are going to France on 12th August and will get there at approximately 6.00pm, (local time). We just want to stay there the night and then move on.

Many Thanks

Helen

Try Chateau de Ganspette at Eperleques, just north of St Omer. They take overnight bookings - but in August you may find you need to ring up to reserve first. There aren't that many 'recommended' sites if you look in the Caravan Club or Alan Rogers guides in that area, and some seem dubious quality, but Ganspette is lovely, friendly, clean facilities, good size pitches, and a really good value restaurant. We've just had our usual overnight stop there, and had Tarte Poireaux (4 euros), a Salad Verte (2.5 euros), Steak/frites (9 euros), and a carafe of wine (4 euros). Can't be bad - and they fitted us in after we arrived at 10 past 9 at night!!! Can you imagine any site in England doing that?

Ganspette is a great site for overnight stops and it is also nice for a longer stay. Facilities are good and clean, nice swimming pool and the restaurant does takeaways.

Easy drive either from or to Calais.

Over here on the Continent, we often turn up as late as 10pm and have never had any difficulty in setting up, even though, on occasions during the low season, we have had to call the warden by phone to open up.

We've always used La Bien Assise. Castels site, not bad, have spoken to people who prefer Chateau de Ganspette but have never been there so can't comment. La Bien Assise seems to be in most books and brochures.

If you are in the Caravan Club you can book a night at Gandspette through the ABS. Would agree with the comments about Gandspette, one of our favourite sites. There are several other sites in the area but some are quite small and likely full by 6.00pm or are a bit out the way for an overnighter.
