A mate of mine paid 2k for a Abbey county oxford at easter and traveling a 500 mile trip to get it,August bank holiday weekend he went to the farm where it is kept only to find it gone. The thieves broke the lock on the gates and took it off the hinges, broke the wheel lock and the tow bar lock on the van and went.Basicly the police dont want to know,It was not cris registered because of age and the only reciept for it was of course in the van,the dealer has no record of selling it and the insurance company doesnt seem to want to pay out as there doesnt seem enougth evidence of profe of ownership let alone theft, can anyone advice as to my mates next move,,many thanks

Sorry but I don't believe the dealer has no record of selling it.

I might be wrong but the age of a caravan doesn't determine whether it can be cris registered or not.

Have the police refused to deal with this as an incident? Has no crime number been given to your friend? If not, why not?

Your friend's next steps should be:

1. If he withdrew cash from the bank to pay for the van, get a copy of the statement with the withdrawal of funds showing on it.

2. Go to the dealers in person and demand to see the manager and ask them why there is no record of the van being sold. If the dealer tries to fob your friend off, inform whoever it is who deals with fraud (customs & exercise? not sure) of this. Cheques/bankers drafts can be traced back to the dealer, as can credit/debit card payments.

3. Tell your friend to go to the police station which is dealing with the incident and ask for an incident number.

4. I presume your friend who stored it on a farm paid for the storage? If so, get a copy of the receipt for the storage fees.

5. Who is paying for the repairs to the gates? If it's the owner of the farm where the van was kept, ask for further details as this might prove the gates were tampered with as a means of gaining entry. I presume the farmer phoned the police to report his gates being tampered with?

Do you know which insurance company is dealing with the caravan theft? [ Final paragraph of this post edited, sorry Lisa.

I have the Abbey Stafford circa 94/95, it was cris reg by fist two owners and subsequent owners didnt bother. I bought it 2 years ago and re-registered it with the cris they say they traced 5 other owners and issued the documents to me, took them about 10 weeks but well worth the wait,

I can only assume the above mentioned van was about the same age so no age dos'nt matter

How come the dealer has no record or selling it⇦br/>

If it was a cash sale the dealer might not have put it through the books - hence, he might not 'want' to have any record of it -;)

Hello Eddie,

I can offer little solace to you and your friend, Put your self in the position of an insurance company; would you pay out without pretty conclusive evidence of the caravan having being purchased?

Sadly the evidence you provide is very suspect, there are two many negative coincidences:

No receipt (claimed to be in the caravan)

No record at the dealer

Why wont the police issue a crime number?

No CRIS records of ownership

This all sounds far to shady to be a cosha sale. Are you sure your mates not telling stories?

If it is genuine then it been a rather expensive lesson.

So im a liar to now right,I was with my mate when we went to the farm and found the van missing, locks on the gates and two on the van where removed,it wasnt registered with cris as no form was given him to send in,but we are in contact with them to find out it hasnt been reg by the last two owners,we have a crime number but do the police want to know, the simple answer is NONO.we believe the dealer that sold it to us is also suspect with no record of it,(even this is being looked into)Agreed there a lot of false claims but dont judge everybody on that John (there are honest people about to,i asked on this site for advice on what to do and not to get stupid replys,Anyway as to date it is looking a bit more on the positive side and thanks to all for replys,,

Hi Eddie

Based on the evidence you have given I believe John L's assessment is a fair one and offered in good faith.

How did you mate pay? Cash??

The key factor here for a successful insurance claim is proving beyond all reasonable doubt your mate had good legal title to the caravan. If he can't do that then it may not succeed with Insurers.

Has anyone else ever seen the caravan?

Was it advertised by the dealer? Is the advert still available?

Cheers

A still very wet Dustydog on Isle of Lewis.
