I was wondering if any could give there advice on caravan tyres. At the moment on our van we have continenal tyres 165R13C 91/89R which need replacing. Have had a quote for budget caravan tyres for £114.oo for 2 which are 8 ply. Did ask about the ones we have now and he advised that these crack (which has happened to ours).

Also any advise on Tyrons to stop making to much damage if you have a blow out.

Thanks

Whichever tyres you go for you will need the same '91' load rating that you've got now.

Tyron bands are intended to prevent the tyre bead coming off the wheel rim, thereby supposedly improving stability in the event of a blowout. Whether they actually do or whether the tyre will stay on the rim anyway whether Tyron bands are fitted or not has been debated at length in this forum and Tyron themselves have never come up with convincing proof. However, your question is a different one. Do they prevent damage? On thing is for sure, they cannot prevent the tyre carcass from distintegrating after a blowout because, at best, they can only retain the bead. The tyre tread will always be free to do some damage, whatever precautions you take. Tyron bands cannot help here.

Your tyres are already 6ply so moving up to 8ply may or may not be of benefit, the main criteria to consider is the tyres you choose can carry a minimum of the loaded weight of your van +10%

If you do change from the current type tyre this will alter the correct requried pressure, refer to Tyresafe charts for correct pressure

Tyron bands will stop the tyre leaving the rim, while the rim presents a flat surface the tyre will keep a more regular shape.

If you get a puncture without them the tyres free to do as it likes, even if it stays on, it's shape will be far worse as it collapses into the well.

Therefore, while the tyres held on the rim by Tyron bands, and if nothing else, it's speed of destruction must be reduced.

To that extent then they are an advantage, the degree might be debatable but an advantage none the less!

My experience of blowouts is that by the time the car has come to a stop, much of the tread has parted from the carcass and the rubber has got so hot due flexibility of the tyre when there's no air left in it, that any remains are already charred. This is something that Tyron bands cannot prevent.
