There is no such thing as an 'official document', at least not in the UK. There are only recommendations, usually 5 years. In Germany there is a legal requirement with a 6 year limit, but only if you intend to tow at 100km/h instead of the regular 80km/h speed limit.

If you are a Caravan club member, look at their website for good advice on age of tyres etc. Thy insist that tyres should be changed at 5 years old regardless of mileage, and many vans have tyres which are at least a year older the the the Van - e.g a MY 07 van may have tyres dating from 06 or earlier ( due to the manufacturer holding stocks),

Althought tyes may not have done many miles, there will generally have been standing about in the meantime and this can be as bad as lots of miles. There have been some particular issues with Asian origin tyres fitted to new vans - searh the previous postings.

I have just changed the tyres on my van (tyres from slovenia) after 12,000 miles which I have never had to do before - they where the original and borderline in capacity against the max. permitted wieght of the van.

Hi,

With Caravans it is the lack of use that kills a tyre. I have never seen any advice about changing car tyres after a few years and there is good reason. Rubber is a material that contains natural oils. These oils are squeezed out of the rubber, so lubricating itself, during normal use. When the tyre is not used there is no lubrication and the rubber starts to crack. When you fit new tyres you can take the date for replacement from the date that they are fitted, this is because the tyres are stored in warehouses under conditions which minimises any deterioration, (so I have been told).

Since when has the caravan club been factual?

The ROSPA information is very misleading and can easily be misinterpreted. They say, quote:

Tyres that have been in storage should not be placed into use if they are over 6 years old, from their date of manufacture. When a tyre has been in use, the effects of aging are lessened to a degree, but such tyres should be replaced after 10 years.

This could be understood to mean that the tyres could already be 6 years old when they were first fitted and then used another 10 years, i.e. 16 years in total, but I don't think that is what they meant.

Besides, no disrespect to ROSPA, but their advice can hardly be described as an 'official document' which is what Jon was asking for. Whichever way it is interpreted, the advice certainly contradicts other sources, so it is still a matter of who you ask what sort of advice you get.
